No, they want something else, but we refuse to listen. They want us to face up to our broken obligations.' Every spring during the Qingming Festival, people return to their home villages in China to sweep the tombs of their ancestors, making offerings of food and incense to prevent them from becoming hungry ghosts that could cause misfortune. Yet for the past century, a time ruptured by war and revolution, many tombs have been left unattended. Following a record year of wildfires, Alice Mah returns to her family's rice village in South China, and discovers that her ancestors are almost forgotten, and there are no tombs left to sweep. Instead, there are incalculable clan debts to be paid. Here Mah chronicles her journey from the rice villages of South China to her home in post-industrial England, through the Chinatowns of Western Canada where she grew up, to the isles and industry of Scotland where she now lives. As years pass and fires rage on, she becomes increasingly troubled by her ancestors' neglected graves. Her research on pollution gives way to growing eco-anxiety, culminating in a crisis of spiritual belief. A haunting blend of memoir, cultural history and environmental exploration, Red Pockets confronts the hungry ghosts of our neglected ancestors, while searching for an acceptable offering. This collection examines how linguistically diverse diaspora communities experienced and translated the COVID-19 pandemic in London, exploring nuances of difference across them to better understand how these communities mediate public health discourses in the globalized city.Drawing on scholarship from cultural translation and an emic approach, the volume features rich and varied perspectives on the unfolding of the COVID-19 pandemic from scholars working and living in over a dozen Asian and African language communities in the city. Building on data from online surveys and face-to-face-interviews with almost 200 community members, the book charts how information about the pandemic was disseminated across these different minority communities and in turn, how these communities understood and translated it into their own cultural framework and against prevailing public discourses. The volume also looks forward to the recovery process and the needs of these communities, reinforcing the value of a socio-cultural translation approach in better understanding how to support these communities in the wake of global health crises moving forward.This book will be of interest not only to scholars in translation studies, intercultural communication, crisis communication, cultural studies, and post-colonial studies, but also to public health practitioners and community leaders.

The Seven Years' War, the Battle of Plassey won against the Nawab of Bengal, the acquisition of the Bengal Diwani Rights and the Act of Regulating set the stage for the Second British Empire in Asia between 1756 and 1773. These events and the growing settlements had brought an ever-increasing number of soldiers to Bengal and the other factories of India. The French had largely lost the geopolitical game in Asia, but remained numerous in Pondichéry and even in Bengal (Chandannagar).The cultural history of these major shifts in global power deserves more attention: an increase in the number of European libraries abroad is not surprising for either nation. But the British case is special: a very different form of high culture society was now established in Calcutta, with the first common law court of record ever established outside Britain, the Supreme Court. A long tradition and recent scholarship have largely clarified our ideas about how political-economic leaders like Warren Hastings and major scholars like William Jones supported and influenced the study of Persian and Sanskrit manuscripts and indigenous legal traditions at this moment. But the book also shows that at the same time, as Europe's population grew, a more standardized form of libraries and a Western reading culture emerged. With the arrival of more soldiers and company servants, a Western world canon began to form. This differed from the period up to 1750 in the Mediterranean and India, studied in the first volume&nbsp;Western Libraries and Reading, where a multiplicity of small libraries, individual in size and selection, prevailed. One of the first massive manifestations of this Western canon, with a particularly Franco-British character, can be traced in the serial documentation of post-mortem household inventories. The results of a first detailed analysis of the bestsellers of the late eighteenth century among Europeans in India until 1800 are surprising: A "world literature" in the ambiguous Goethean sense becomes visible, and almost no European medieval author survives (until nineteenth-century Romanticism). In today's world, a "Western canon" is usually criticized, debated, and decentered, and with good reason, but as a historical process, the impact of such an imported canon cannot be ignored. No one denies the strong dynamics of autonomous forms of print and reading culture now emerging simultaneously in Hindi, Tamil, Bengali, Urdu, and many other languages, sometimes hybridizing with British production. To some extent, however, it must also be acknowledged that British Bengal early on provided an immense space for this Western canon abroad, comparable ultimately only to the American East Coast.

The issue brings together articles exploring popular techno-futures from international and interdisciplinary perspectives, including cultural and media studies, science and technology studies, and related disciplines. The contributors decenter the discussion on socio-technical futures and the role of popular culture, aesthetics and media in their (re)production by focusing on societal tech-future discourses from global popular perspectives.
