When a team of Victorian archaeologists dug into a grassy hill in Iraq, they chanced upon one of the oldest and greatest stores of knowledge ever seen: the library of the Assyrian king Ashurbanipal, seventh century BCE ruler of a huge swathe of the ancient Middle East known as Mesopotamia. After his death, vengeful rivals burned Ashurbanipal's library to the ground - yet the texts, carved on clay tablets, were baked and preserved by the heat. Buried for millennia, the tablets were written in cuneiform: the first written language in the world. More than half of human history is written in cuneiform, but only a few hundred people on earth can read it. In this captivating new book, Assyriologist Selena Wisnom takes us on an immersive tour of this extraordinary library, bringing ancient Mesopotamia and its people to life. Through it, we encounter a world of astonishing richness, complexity and sophistication. Mesopotamia, she shows, was home to advanced mathematics, astronomy and banking, law and literature. This was a culture absorbed and developed by the ancient Greeks, and whose myths were precursors to Bible stories - in short, a culture without which our lives today would be unrecognizable. Tracing the origins of Britain’s current malaise to the abandonment of social democracy What has happened to Britain? As drivers on its roads can attest, it is the pothole capital of Europe. Once-beautiful towns now feature peeling paint, weeds and broken railings. Public services are no longer fit for purpose. A malaise seems to infect every aspect of British life: its economy, polity, social order, sense of well-being, domestic regional relationships and place in the world. In The Land Where Nothing Works, the distinguished historian A. G. Hopkins offers an explanation, tracing Britain’s current problems to decisions made in the 1980s that abandoned its postwar experiment in social democracy and mimicked policies of deregulation and privatisation promoted by the United States. In 1945, the new Labour government’s development programme aimed at creating a social democracy that would benefit all members of society. The counterrevolution launched by Margaret Thatcher’s government in 1979, which remains in force today, promoted individualism and deregulation. The transition from one programme to another was a response to the growth of finance and services centred on the City of London, and to decolonisation, which redirected trade to Europe. The expansion of credit led to the financial crisis of 2008 and the years of austerity that followed, and fuelled the populist movement that culminated in Brexit. Hopkins argues that, instead of following the free-market policies of its mentor, the United States, Britain should draw on its own history of social democracy and borrow from its neighbours in Europe, where communitarian principles continue to be upheld.

In collaboration with the estate of Bill Traylor, this publication offers a comprehensive look at the self-taught artist’s distinctive imagery, which mixes subjects and iconography from the American South with a strong formalistic treatment of color, shape, and surface.Born into slavery, Traylor spent much of his life after the 1863 Emancipation Proclamation working as a farm laborer in rural Alabama and, later, as a shoemaker and factory worker in Montgomery. In 1939, at approximately the age of 85, having never previously trained or studied art in any formal way, Traylor began making drawings and works on paper using gouache and other media. Though he continued to make art for the remainder of his life, Traylor was most prolific between 1939 and 1942, creating a body of work that offers a unique and rich registry of his life, experience, and insights.This monograph weaves beautiful reproductions of Traylor’s works with essays by and conversations with his descendants, offering a unique and deeply personal look at this artist whose work exists in the collections of many notable institutions in the United States but whose story has never been fully told.

But more than the arguments themselves-on affirmative action, institutional racism, Trumpism-his public life has been characterised by fearlessness and a willingness to recalibrate strongly held and forcefully argued beliefs.
Loury grew up on the south side of Chicago, earned a PhD in MIT's economics programme and became the first Black tenured professor of economics at Harvard at the age of thirty-three. He has been, at turns, a young father, a drug addict, an adulterer, a psychiatric patient, a born-again Christian, a lapsed born-again Christian and a Black Reaganite. How contemporary artist Glenn Ligon’s expansive body of work mines American history and literature to ask critical questions about modern culture. OCTOBER Files: Glenn Ligon (b. 1960) presents the first compilation of critical discourse on the multimedia work of one of the most influential American artists of the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries. Often citing or annotating past literary (e.g., James Baldwin), artistic (e.g., Andy Warhol), and musical (e.g., Steve Reich) interventions, Ligon’s practice imaginatively explores the contradictions of speech, vision, authorship, identity, blackness and belonging in works that are at once historically resonant and materially sensuous. Spanning Ligon’s emergence in the postmodern multicultural milieu of New York in the late 1980s and early ‘90s, his starring turns at Documenta, the Venice Biennale, and other international exhibitions of the 2000–10s, and his formative impact on both new and canonical art histories, this volume provides a comprehensive accounting of the questions central to his work in painting, sculpture, video, installation, and print. With texts by writers from Wayne Koestenbaum to Rizvana Bradley, this File not only plumbs the depths of Ligon’s oeuvre, but also models the various approaches to critical writing that have defined art and culture of the past 30 years.
