"We are living in what might be considered a 'carceral world'. Practices, performances, spatialities, imaginaries, and experiences of incarceration are widespread. Carceral Worlds offers a necessary and timely contribution to understanding these realities of our globalized present. The book interrogates the central implication of prison systems in population management and expands our perspectives of security, imprisonment and confinement to account for the historical and social constructions that drive the connections between prisons and the capitalist system. Crucially, it addresses the intersection of the carceral beyond traditional spaces of incarceration and imprisonment to interrogate, for example, infrastructures of labor; religion; the prolonged effects of colonial heritage on the everyday; ecological concerns; homelessness; migrant detention; and city management as part of the production of our 'carceral world'. Women's freedom is a myth. Or so we're told. If there is one thing that right and left can agree on, it's that this is a very bad time to be female. Misogyny is everywhere and, as the right would have it, thanks to a big fat liberal lie known as the sexual revolution, it is worse than ever. The death of courtship, duty and marriage are nails in the coffin of female happiness. The left has its own muddled ideas about sex, duty and marriage, but it knows this: girls' and women's bodies are an inventory of pain and suffering that needs to be outed, from period pain to menopause to endometriosis. Indeed, the narrative of female bodily disadvantage is so extreme that experts are beginning to admit it is at least partially responsible for the 5,000 per cent rise in girls reporting to gender clinics claiming to be boys. Increasingly, in the schemes of both right and left, women's agency is vanishing. In both, they are fragile, eminently breakable, and constantly facing a risk of permanent damage. Fear is everywhere and yet we're at a moment and a place in which women have never ever had it so good. This book is a call for women - and society - to get back in touch with the joy, freedom and power that Zoe and her female peers, evidently born in a lucky window (post-feminism, pre-Internet), saw opening up before them and, to some degree, have realised.

Originally viewed with immense optimism and hailed as a panacea for overcoming violent conflict, peacebuilding today has emerged as one of the biggest development challenges facing the world. As a concept and strategy, peacebuilding has found positive resonance among INGOs and there is evidence of increasing peace building involvement of these organisations in post-conflict societies from Afghanistan to Angola, Sierra Leone to Iraq. This book explores the potential and viability of INGOs as sustainable peacebuilders, by examining and analysing the involvement of three organisations; International Alert, Conciliation Resources and World Vision in specific peacebuilding activities. On the basis of this analysis a model for effective INGO participation in the field of post-conflict peacebuilding is constructed which, if implemented, has the potential to ensure the meaningful and effective engagement of INGOs in peacebuilding activities.

How international organizations can combat populist opposition—and the implications for institutional resilience, legitimacy, and accountability Populist leaders around the world increasingly reject international organizations, decrying them as constraints on state power and rallying followers against the “global elite” who run them. These institutions—painstakingly built through decades of negotiation and multilateral cooperation—are often seen as passive bystanders, unable or unwilling to push back. In Global Governance Under Fire, Allison Carnegie and Richard Clark challenge this view, arguing that international organizations are, in fact, strategic agents with the tools to resist populist pressures. Offering fresh theoretical insights and original empirical analysis, they investigate how these institutions fight back and how their defensive strategies are reshaping global governance. Using a multimethod approach that draws on novel data and qualitative evidence, Carnegie and Clark identify four key strategies that international organizations employ—appeasing and sidelining populists and their constituents. They find that while these strategies help fortify global governance against populist opposition, they may also carry unintended consequences, potentially eroding institutional legitimacy and fueling further resistance. A timely and compelling account, the book provides a crucial roadmap for understanding—and safeguarding—the global order.
