This book is a compilation of the papers and posters that have been accepted and presented at the Global Conference on Economic Diversification 2024. The main subject of the Global Conference on Economic Diversification (GCED) 2024 was to address methodological, theoretical, policy focused, and thought-leadership outcomes based on the EDI dataset and beyond. GCED brought together research scholars, academics, policy experts, and government decision-makers from around the world working on the frontiers of research and implementation of economic diversification. Accepted papers which were presented in this series, concluded either with rigorous research insights based on empirical analyses of important hypotheses pertaining to economic diversification or suggested policy recommendations based on in depth case studies and/or mixed method approaches. These insights thus is useful both for policymakers, economists in charge of macroeconomic stability, treasury officials and senior research faculty interested in the topic(s) of economic diversification, the resource curse, revenue diversification, and/or the commodity dependence trap.

Ethics and Social Licence in the Blue Economy squarely confronts the vexing and urgent ethical challenges related to the economic and development potential of the seas. Environmental economics is growing rapidly. It is simply not sufficient to consider consumption, production, and welfare in isolation from the natural environment. Integrating ecological systems in economic analysis requires to take the possible occurrence of tipping points or regime shifts into account. This Element focuses on two recent developments in environmental economics theory. One is economic management of ecological systems with tipping points, with the lake as the classical example. The other one is investigating the consequences of uncertain possible shocks to parameters in economic models, with the carrying capacity in a fishery and total factor productivity (due to climate tipping) in Ramsey growth as examples. This Element provides a precise account of the concepts, techniques, and results in the analysis of these models, which shows the effects of tipping and allows for other applications. This Element starts with a broader list of examples and management options.

Economic evaluation techniques like Cost-Benefit Analysis (CBA) reinforce the idea that to receive funding, a project need to generate economic growth. However, this book argues that the priority of the economics discipline should be to illuminate resource allocation and scarcity and propose ways to make the economy self-sustainable, helping to avoid inflation and poverty. To do this, the book highlights that not all public needs—such as social housing or other non-profit services—require economic growth. It argues that by decoupling public funding from taxation and interest-based borrowing, governments could more effectively fund essential public services that do not need to be profitable, thereby freeing the public sector from the growth imperative imposed by the current financial system.
