"Ovid's Metamorphoses offers a compelling site for reconsidering the category of the human within the complex ecologies that make up the world as we know it. The poem's recurrent theme is the physical transformation of humans into other life forms, a theme that invites readers to consider how human and non-human agencies have evolved from and adapted to one another in a relationship characterized by fluctuating perceptions of friction and symbiosis, distance and proximity. This volume of essays traces the variety of ways in which the world of the Metamorphoses offers a set of structures for modelling the relationship between humans and other agencies within the biosphere in ways that answer to many of the precepts of contemporary eco-criticism. The contributors make the case for seeing the worldview depicted in this ancient text as an exemplar of the 'premodern' ecological mindset that contemporary environmental thought seeks to approximate in many ways. Their papers also scrutinize a number of critical moments in the history of the text's ecological reception (including reflections by a contemporary poet, as well as studies of important Medieval and Renaissance receptions of Ovid) in an attempt to recuperate the Metamorphoses as a foundational text in the history of environmental thought"--

This book positions Ovid’s Metamorphoses as a foundational text in the western history of environmental thought. The poem is about new bodies. Stones, springs, plants and animals materialize out of human origins to create a world of hybrid objects, which retain varying degrees of human subjectivity while taking on new physical form. In bending the boundaries of known categories of being, these hybrid entities reveal both the porousness of human and other agencies as well as the dangers released by their fusion. Metamorphosis unsettles the category of the human within the complex ecologies that make up the world as we know it.

Drawing on a range of modern environmental theorists and approaches, the contributors to this volume trace how the Metamorphoses models the relationship between humans and other life forms in ways that resonate with the preoccupations of contemporary eco-criticism. They make the case for seeing the worldview depicted in Ovid’s poem as an exemplar of the ‘premodern’ ecological mindset that contemporary environmental thought seeks to approximate. They also highlight critical moments in the history of the poem’s ecological reception, including reflections by a contemporary poet, as well as studies of Medieval and Renaissance responses to Ovid.

This book presents a systematic, comprehensive study of two imperial systems that were arguably the most complex, broadly influential entities to have arisen in antiquity. This text is designed to offer a comparative introduction to the empires of Rome and Qin-Han China, examining the formation, consolidation, further evolution and disintegration of these two complex states. The two empires were comparably similar in territorial extent, population, and chronological span, and display a wide range of structural similarities. Each also underwent a gradual increase in territory, to emerge as the preeminent political, social and cultural power in its region. Finally, after significant expansion, both empires underwent periods of turbulent internal and external disruption. This book represents a timely study in terms of the rapidly growing academic interest in macro-historical, comparative assessments of imperial systems, and translates those understandings into an accessible study that will prove valuable to students, scholars and the general public.

The Ruminal fig tree sheltered the she-wolf as she nursed Romulus and Remus and year's later Rome was founded between two groves. As the city grew, neighbourhoods bore the names of groves and hills were known by the trees which grew atop them. From the 1st century BCE, triumphs included trees among their spoils and Rome's green cityscape grew, as did the challenges of finding room for trees within the congested city. This volume begins with an examination of the role of trees as repositories of human memory, lasting for several generations. Together the Dacians and the Getae were the creators of the largest unified power of ancient Europe outside of the Roman Empire, yet each was colonized and integrated into the Roman imperial system differently. Unlike the short-lived but intense Roman experience of the Dacians, the Getae met first Greek colonists, followed by Roman integration in stages over many years. This volume utilizes high-resolution GIS mapping, remote sensing data, and aerial and satellite imagery to demonstrate changes to the landscape and to reconsider human settlement in antiquity. It provides a fresh investigation of the evolution of urbanization and developments in local economy, as well as long-term changes in material culture, social behavior, and identity over more than a thousand years. The Getae offers a realistic appreciation of the character of Roman military occupation and participation of provincial subjects in the Roman imperial system.

Together the Dacians and the Getae were the creators of the largest unified power of ancient Europe outside of the Roman Empire, yet each was colonized and integrated into the Roman imperial system differently. Unlike the short-lived but intense Roman experience of the Dacians, the Getae met first Greek colonists who settled along the western Black Sea shore, followed by Roman expansion and integration of the territory in stages over many years. As the imperial system gradually changed its ideology, priorities, and control mechanisms, the Getae were afforded numerous opportunities for contact and cultural change. The data and literature on the Getae to date has however emerged from traditional site-based investigations and surveys, resulting in heavily biased and fragmented understandings of the scale, nature, and impact of their conquest and colonization. This sweeping volume utilizes high-resolution GIS mapping, extensive analysis of remote sensing data, and archival aerial and satellite imagery to present a holistic view of changes to the landscape and to reconsider the extent of human settlement in antiquity. It offers a fresh investigation of the evolution of urbanization, developments in local economy, taxation, and administration, as well as long-term changes in material culture, social behavior, and identity over a period of more than a thousand years. The Getae offers a uniquely realistic appreciation of the nature and character of Roman military occupation and the participation of provincial subjects in the Roman imperial system.

A focused study of an ancient myth and its reception, which provokes new consideration of how myth in general can challenge social norms. Analyzing the visual and literary transformations of the myth of Endymion and Selene, Anna Chiara Corradino argues that this myth becomes a valuable tool for understanding the cultural problematization and censorship of female sexuality, as well as the marginalization of alternative forms of male sexuality. The myth's key themes, of dominant femininity, reified masculinity and female necrophilia, are shaped through the centuries from the core story of Selene, the goddess of the Moon, falling in love with a mortal shepherd, Endymion, and granting him eternal sleep so she can kiss him every night.
 
 In five core sections focusing on the archaeology of the myth in the ancient world, the art of the Renaissance to Baroque periods, and modern art and film, Corradino traces the way the relationship between the two 'lovers' embodies the taboo topic of the eroticization of the sleeping and/or dead male body, and the suppressed desire of female domination and dominance. There’s a Little Puppy in Your Book

This book examines the reception of Graeco-Roman sculptures of Venus and their role in the construction of the body aesthetics of the "fit" American woman in the decades around the turn of the 20th century. In this historical moment, 19th-century anthropometric methods, the anti-corset dress reform movement and early fitness culture were united in their goal of identifying and producing healthy, procreative female bodies. These discourses presented ancient statues of Venus - most frequently, the Venus de Milo - as the supreme visual model of a superior, fit, feminine physique. An America of such Venuses would herald the future prosperity of the "American race" by reviving the robust health and moral righteousness of the ancient Greeks.
 
 Venuses had long been symbols of beauty, but the new situation of Venus statues as an aesthetic and moral destination for women set up a slippage between ideal sculpture and living bodies: what did it mean for a woman to embody - or to try to embody - the perfect health and beauty of an ancient statue? How were women expected to translate this model into flesh? What were the political stakes to which this vision of a nation of American Venuses was bound? Who was believed to conform to this ideal, and who was excluded from it? In taking on these questions, Franks engages with physical culture and dress-reform media, modern artwork that adapts Graeco-Roman traditions, anthropological texts, art histories of ancient Greece, film, advertising and medical reporting on women's health.
