Black women in the United States have often been the subject of negative stereotypes, which have distorted perceptions of their unique work history and the challenges that they have faced in providing for their families. Black Women in the U.S. Economy: The Hardest Working Woman challenges the popular rhetoric about black women by presenting an empirical analysis of their labor market experiences and the critical role that black women play in providing for and sustaining their families and communities. The book explores the multiple identities, roles, and experiences of black women in the U.S. economy, addressing issues including their contribution to the social economy, how they have been affected by U.S economic restructuring, and the impact of increasing economic inequality on the wellbeing of black women and children.

Black women in the United States have often been the subject of negative stereotypes, which have distorted perceptions of their unique work history and the challenges that they have faced in providing for their families. Black Women in the U.S. Economy: The Hardest Working Woman challenges the popular rhetoric about black women by presenting an empirical analysis of their labor market experiences and the critical role that black women play in providing for and sustaining their families and communities. The authors use a Black Feminist framework along with applied microeconomics and econometrics in order to understand the multiple identities, roles, and experiences of black women in the U.S. economy. The book’s multi-dimensional analysis covers issues including black women’s contribution to the social economy, how economic restructuring in the U.S. has impacted on black women, and how declining wages since the 1970s have led to economic inequality and the impact that this has had on the wellbeing of black women and children. All chapters situate their analysis of the economic status of black women within the context of market forces, social relations among counter-groups, and political economy. This groundbreaking study will be essential reading for all those with an interest in Economics, Women’s Studies, Africana Studies and Sociology.

As Africa's foremost epic poet, Mazisi Kunene occupies a unique place in history. In this study, Dike Okoro illuminates the penetrating insights found in Kunene's poetry and the reasons why his art has been considered as masterpieces grounded in geography, history, and culture. He situates Kunene as a theorist who embraces African tradition - including his adoption of izibongo, Zulu praise poetry - and the role of the artist as a chronicler of his people's history, committed to art as a catalyst for change, not justd South Africa but for Africans around the globe.
 
 These essays and interviews address the post-apartheid reality of South Africa and draw from a repository of rich images found in Kunene's poetry to provide examples of depictions of colonial exploitation in Africa; the rootedness of traditional African culture; women and children who bring hope; and art as a way to effect change. They demonstrate Kunene's profound influence on and in world literature, interrogating his work for its style and connections with poetry by Native Americans and other Indigenous literary traditions.

Positioning Henry James within his transatlantic and pan-European contexts, Peter Rawlings relocates James and the New Criticism's ideology of organicism in biology rather than in aesthetics. He argues that the novel as a character-driven genre emerged from philosophical and scientific thinking about consciousness and that James's canonization must be reexamined in the context of the philosophical, physiological, and biological discourses on which he drew in his theory and practice as a novelist.

Positioning Henry James within his transatlantic and pan-European contexts, Peter Rawlings relocates James and the New Criticism's ideology of organicism in biology rather than in aesthetics. Rawlings argues that the novel as a genre anchored in the representation of character emerged from philosophical and scientific thinking about consciousness and experience that begins in the late seventeenth century and encompasses two hundred years of traffic between Europe and America. His ambitious study explores the significance of American thinkers and their European antecedents, from Jonathan Edwards to Josiah Royce, aligning James's 1884 essay "The Art of Fiction" with contemporary thinking on consciousness and its dense, ramifying aetiology. By this point, Herbert Spencer had extended Darwin's evolutionary thinking into the social domain, disrupting ideas about consciousness as allied with the soul even as the fin-de-siècle enthusiasm for panpsychism and the paranormal made a last stand against the New Sciences. A major contention of Rawlings's book is that Henry James should not and cannot be isolated from the urgent need to rethink what seminal critics such as Ian Watt and Marthe Robert have said about the procession of the novel from prose fiction. James's canonization by the New Critics motivates Rawlings's reexamination of Walter Scott, Jane Austen, Susan Warner, and George Eliot, among others, in the context of the vast range of eighteenth- and nineteenth-century European and North American philosophical, physiological, and biological discourses on which James drew in his theory and practice as a novelist.

The Colombian architectural firm ESUS (Esguerra, Saenz, Urdaneta y Samper) played a key role in the development of modern architecture in Colombia during the mid-20th century. Notable for their technical innovation, elaborate language and careful execution, ESUS' buildings also carry broader significance in terms of our understanding of how the international ideals of architectural modernism were adapted to local Latin American contexts. Yet until now there has existed no English-language study of their architecture and legacy. 
Published as part of the Bloomsbury Studies in Modern Architecture series, which brings to light the work of significant yet overlooked modernist architects, this book examines ESUS' work from an array of perspectives including the technological, formal, material, urban, and global, showing in particular how their high-rise concrete buildings contribute to new understandings of the history of concrete architecture. 
Including previously unpublished archival documents, images, and drawings, this is an important new account in the expanding scholarly history of modernism in Latin America.
