The book surveys the history and teachings of Taoism (Daoism) over the course of Chinese civilization, and explores themes and ideas that interest modern minds. The religions of Asia continually fascinate people around the world. During the 20th century, the Taoist (Daoist) tradition of China became well-known. But even at the century's end, our understandings of Taoism was limited to what scholars of Asia and Western lands had revealed. Few knew of the probing researches also being conducted by scholars of Russia, particularly Evgeny Torchinov (1956-2003). Torchinov, Russia's leading authority on Taoism, died suddenly before completing the final English edition of his comprehensive introduction, Daosizm: Opyt Istoriko-religioznogo Opisaniia. Here at last is that English edition and we see Taoism through fresh eyes, revealing new insights into the minds and lives of centuries of Chinese Taoists.

A New Perspective

Jordan currently hosts the second largest percentage of registered refugees in the world: three million out of its eleven million inhabitants. Its experience in hosting migrants and refugees precedes its independence in 1946, with the arrival of Circassians, Chechens, and Armenians from the late 19th century. Jordan thus constitutes a unique observatory for reception policies and long-term settlement of different migrant groups. Based on original empirical and archival material, this volume focuses on migrations caused by conflicts, wars, and crises underscoring their articulation with longstanding human mobility. It sheds light on the cumulative and processual dimensions of Jordan's reception policies and migrants' settlement strategies. It identifies the multiple actors involved in the management of migrants and, conversely, the latter's contribution to the Jordanian social, economic, political, and urban fabric. The first part of the volume examines the policies adopted by the Jordanian authorities and international organizations to regulate access to basic services and to the labour market, and explores the economic and political factors underlying them. The second part analyzes the effects of Jordan's policies on the territorial distribution and settlement of migrants. How have these policies, combined with the adaptation strategies of migrants contributed to shaping new urban spaces? The third part focuses on capacity of the migrants to activate, establish, (re)build, and intersect different kinds of solidarity networks within the context of protracted displacement.

This book examines the convergences, divergences and reciprocal lessons that the BRICS countries (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa) share with one another in developing the principles of private international law. The chapters provide a thematic understanding of the cornerstones of private international law in each of the BRICS countries: namely, (1) the procedure to initiate claims in civil and commercial matters, (2) the law that would govern such matters in litigation and arbitration, as well as (3) the mechanism to recognise and enforce foreign judgments and arbitral awards. Written by leading private international law scholars and practitioners, the chapters draw on domestic legislation and its interpretation through cases decided by the courts in each of these emerging economies, and explicitly cover the rules applicable in contractual and non-contractual concerns and issues of choice of court agreements. Issues around marriage, divorce, matrimonial property, succession and surrogacy are also addressed, considering the implication of such aspects through the increased movement of persons. The book is a useful comparative resource for the governments of the BRICS countries, legislators, traders, academics, researchers and students looking for an in-depth discussion of the reciprocal lessons that these countries may have to offer one another on these issues.

This book explores central issues of religion in an age of globalization, questioning how religion speaks to us in contemporary society, and how representations of religion impact in popular culture. Focusing on Japanese popular culture, MacWilliams examines Japanese comic books in particular: Japanese manga or 'comic books' often explicitly deal with religion, and commercially published manga account for over 40% of total number of books and magazines published in Japan. The magic of manga lies in their potential "to dramatise and exaggerate information and simplify a complex reality", and just like the religious iconography of an earlier age, modern manga offer a powerful visual theology of sacred reality for their audience. What 'imagined selves and worlds' do manga construct? What are some of the important visual theologies that they can convey? These are some of the questions explored in this book. Historians of religion have largely ignored popular culture as a medium of religious experience and expression; yet by neglecting popular genres, such as Japanese manga, they ignore one of the principal ways people day wrestle with contemporary moral and spiritual issues. This book redresses this neglected area, raising profound religious and moral issues that are immediately relevant for those exploring Japanese religion, media and cultural studies, and anyone trying to imagine the sacred today.
