From Meteorology to Engineering Applications

Der Klimawandel ist aus politischen und gesellschaftlichen Diskussionen nicht mehr wegzudenken. Zahlreiche Publikationen befassen sich mit seinen globalen Auswirkungen, Belastungsgrenzen, Handlungsstrategien und Maßnahmen zur Anpassung. Im Gegensatz dazu richtet dieses Buch den Blick auf das Klima in Oberfranken – auf die bereits spürbaren Veränderungen ebenso wie auf die Entwicklungen, die in den kommenden Jahren zu erwarten sind.
Viele dieser Veränderungen sind der breiten Öffentlichkeit kaum bewusst. Sie werden oft erst erkennbar, wenn wir etwa unsere Eltern oder Großeltern danach fragen, wie sie die Winter ihrer Kindheit erlebt haben. Das Buch beschreibt Lufttemperaturen, Niederschläge, Schneefälle und Extremereignisse wie Hochwasser in den verschiedenen Regionen Oberfrankens äußerst detailliert.
Trotz des wissenschaftlichen Fundaments ist der Text allgemeinverständlich geschrieben. Er knüpft an persönliche Erfahrungen und Alltagsbeobachtungen an und möchte damit das Bewusstsein für den regionalen Klimawandel stärken. Zielgruppen sind Schülerinnen und Schüler höherer Jahrgangsstufen sowie interessierte Bürgerinnen und Bürger. Darüber hinaus versteht sich das Buch als fundierte Grundlage für politische Entscheidungen. Es will Parteien, Vereine und Organisationen für die Klimaproblematik sensibilisieren und zu eigenem Handeln anregen.

Die Autoren
Thomas Foken ist Professor im Ruhestand für Mikrometeorologie an der Universität Bayreuth mit langjähriger Erfahrung in Forschung und Lehre zur Wechselwirkung zwischen Erdoberfläche und Atmosphäre. Zuvor leitete er Abteilungen an den Meteorologischen Observatorien in Potsdam und Lindenberg. Seit mehr als 25 jahren erforscht er das regionale Klima in Nordbayern. Seine Arbeiten zur experimentellen Meteorologie wurden international ausgezeichnet.
Johannes Lüers ist promovierter und habilitierter Geowissenschaftler mit Lehr- und Forschungsschwerpunkten in Geoökologie und Klimatologie an der Universität Bayreuth. Seit 2021 ist er Geschäftsführer beim Bund Naturschutz in Bayern e.V. Seine Arbeit befasst sich mit den Folgen des Klimawandels für Umwelt und Gesellschaft – in Forschung, Lehre, Beratung und politischer Praxis.

Oberfranken im Klimawandel

Ball lightning is an enigma. These luminous objects that appear occasionally during thunderstorms and can reach several meters in diameter have been a mystery to science for about 200 years. Despite several thousands of reported observations, their nature is still unknown. In this book, well documented cases of ball lightning are described and used to unravel some aspects of this mysterious form of atmospheric electricity. Throughout the book, the author discusses the various facets of the problem in an accessible but rigorous style, delivering a readable and informative text that will captivate the curious reader. Now in an updated and expanded second edition, the author reports on groundbreaking new data on conditions under which ball lightning may form and its implications. These new discoveries are elucidated with new figures, additional case descriptions, new material on the interaction of ball lightning with humans, and a discussion of the reliability of ball lightning observations. Disaster and Risk Research: GADRI Book Series

This book presents selected papers from the 5th Global Summit of the Global Alliance of Disaster Research Institutes (GADRI)—Engaging Sciences with Action, which was held virtually and regionally from 31 August to 1 September 2021. The Summit reappraised progress and achievements in disaster risk reduction research by the members towards the targets of the science and technology roadmap to implement the goals and priorities of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015–2030. The programme communicated academic science across various scientific disciplines to policymakers and practitioners. This cross-disciplinary aspect is important for academics to be aware of how science can directly contribute to mitigate national and local disasters, for example, the global pandemic COVID-19, earthquakes and volcanic eruptions.&nbsp;The Global Summit of GADRI was attentive to the necessary influence of the Global Alliance and its supporting regional alliances to reflect disaster research into the outcome of the United Nations Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP26) that took place in Glasgow, UK, in November 2021. The summit contributed to COP26 and provided an impetus to climate change mitigation and adaptation, and health challenges for climate policy to work in the framework of disaster resilience and response. Facilitated through the UK Alliance for Disaster Research, the recommendations by the 5th Global Summit of GADRI were presented at COP26 as well as the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR)’s Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction titled “From Risk to Resilience: Towards Sustainable Development for All in a COVID-19 Transformed World”, which was held in Bali, Indonesia, from 23 to 28 May 2022.&nbsp;

La seconda parte è interamente dedicata alla fluidodinamica in sistemi di riferimento rotanti, con un focus sugli aspetti basilari della meteorologia e dell’oceanografia dinamica, nei quali la forza apparente di Coriolis gioca un ruolo cruciale.&nbsp;Questo testo si propone come una preziosa risorsa per studenti e ricercatori che desiderino acquisire le basi della fluidodinamica applicata a contesti oceanici e atmosferici, offrendo una prospettiva fisica dettagliata e rigorosa.

Seit der Gründung des Max-Planck-Instituts im Jahr 1975 mit dem heutigen Nobelpreisträger Klaus Hasselmann als Gründungsdirektor hat die Klimawissenschaft in Hamburg einen bemerkenswerten Aufschwung erlebt. Zahlreiche Ideen wurden entwickelt, umgesetzt und getestet. Viele davon weckten das Interesse der weltweiten wissenschaftlichen Gemeinschaft und verliehen der modernen Klimaforschung bedeutenden Auftrieb.
Beteiligte dieser bemerkenswerten Entwicklung seit 1975 haben sich zusammengeschlossen, um jene Konzepte zu identifizieren, die „in Hamburg geboren“ wurden. In einem einleitenden Kapitel wird die historische Entwicklung behandelt, einschließlich weiterer bedeutender Fortschritte der Klimawissenschaft im späten 19. und frühen 20. Jahrhundert.
Der Hauptteil besteht aus Kapiteln, die sich mit der Entwicklung zentraler innovativer Konzepte befassen. Das Buch ist in erster Linie ein Werk über wissenschaftliche Konzepte und Ideen – weniger eine allgemeine Geschichte der Klimaforschung in Hamburg.

There has a lot of publications on climate dynamics since the late 1980s, but none of them reflect the climate dynamics as the essence of the discipline combining diagnostic analysis with dynamics theory. This book strives to combine the statistical and diagnostic analysis of data with kinetic theory and numerical simulation trying to make the reader not only aware of it, but also to understand the underlying reasons. As an introduction to climate dynamics, there still have some problems yet not to be the perfect solutions so far. Fortunately, research on climate dynamics and climate prediction theory has drawn the attention and support from national level and is being carried out in an organized manner. It will be beneficial to the research and development of climate dynamics in China and abroad.&nbsp;
