The Blood in Winter

This collective monograph has three objectives: to clarify the form of paganism's survival in the Christian society of the Czech and Polish kingdoms in the Middle Ages; to examine the coexistence of paganism and Christianity in Bohemia and Poland between the 11th and 15th centuries; to shed new light on the processes of external and internal Christianization, which significantly shaped late medieval piety. It seems clear that significant and in many ways unique religious processes took place in medieval Central Europe, conditioned by the need to cope with paganism and the delayed adoption of Western European models of church administration and religious life. In the 15th century, however, Christianized society in the Bohemian and Polish kingdoms began to ask questions that went beyond the intellectual horizons of Western Europe. In the Czech milieu, this process resulted in the Hussite Reformation, a reformation before the Reformation, while in the Polish milieu it gave rise to the concept of unlimited religious tolerance towards pagans derived from natural law and embodied om the, doctrine of ius gentium, as well as to the development of ideas about the uniqueness of Polish Christianity as a bulwark against heresy (Hussite) and Islam.

Mitte der 1970er Jahre waren Migrant*innen ein fester Bestandteil der westdeutschen Gesellschaft. Gleichwohl waren deren politische Partizipationsmöglichkeiten hart umstritten. Politik und Gesellschaft rangen um die Frage, ob die Bundesrepublik ein Einwanderungsland sei. In den Auseinandersetzungen um die Integration und Partizipation von Migrant*innen übernahm München eine Pionierrolle. Als eine der ersten verabschiedete die Stadt 1974 ein "Ausländerprogramm" und richtete einen Ausländerbeirat ein, der die Interessen migrantischer Einwohner*innen und ihre Forderung nach sozialer und politischer Teilhabe vertreten sollte. An der Schnittstelle zwischen Migrations- und Stadtgeschichte zeigt Grazia Prontera die Möglichkeiten und Grenzen dieses Gremiums in den mühsamen Aushandlungsprozessen zwischen Bund, Land und Kommune, die von programmatischen Innovationen ebenso geprägt waren wie von bürokratischen Zuständigkeitsfragen und parteitaktischen Erwägungen.

This book is the first English translation of a German classic in the social-historical historiography of science in the early modern period. It presents a reconstruction of the ‘Scientific Revolution’ based on a critical historical materialism. It argues that the dominant ideas, images, and philosophies of nature of that time were conditioned by humans’ practical and technological relationship with nature, and that they changed in accordance with the historical development of early capitalist society. Against economic reductionism, Lefèvre stresses the interdependence of material conditions of life and theories of nature on the basis of a critical study of sources and historical contexts. The book makes available an important study with related texts and contributes to the current debates on the intersection of historical and political epistemology.The series editors provide a conceptual and contextual introduction, including information on the political-epistemological background of the book first published in 1978.

Im einzigartigen Oeuvre Niki de Saint Phalles spielen spektakuläre, groß dimensionierte Environments eine herausragende Rolle. Ihre Schießbilder, die begehbaren Nanas, der Strawinsky-Brunnen in Paris oder ihr Tarot-Garten in der Toskana sind virtuose Beispiele dafür. Ein vergleichbar imposantes Ensemble, und ihr letztes vollendetes Großprojekt, wurde zu ihrem künstlerischen Vermächtnis: Eine nach ihren Plänen neu gestaltete Grotte in den Herrenhäuser Gärten in Hannover, die im April 2003 der Öffentlichkeit zugänglich gemacht wurde. Im Jahr 1676 als Teil der barocken Gartenanlage erbaut, dienten die drei mit Muscheln, Kristallen, Glas und Mineralien geschmückte Grottenräume ursprünglich als sommerliche Rückzugsmöglichkeit und Ort der Verzauberung. Zur EXPO 2000 wurden sie restauriert und in der Folge von Niki de Saint Phalle prachtvoll neu gestaltet. Durch Kiesel, Mosaike aus farbigem Glas und Spiegeln sowie Figuren aus bemaltem Fiberglas. Die überarbeitete Neuausgabe der Monografie von 2003 beschreibt die Entstehungs- und Restaurierungsgeschichte und verdeutlicht die kunsthistorische Bedeutung der Grotte aus heutiger Sicht.&nbsp;Niki de Saint Phalle (1930-2002) gilt als eine der wichtigsten europäischen Künstlerinnen der Nachkriegszeit. Ihr facettenreiches Werk verband gesellschaftskritische und feministische Ansätze mit einer radikal neuen, teils ikonoklastischen Formensprache und einem experimentellen Umgang mit dem Material. Ab den 1950ern wurde sie durch ihre "Schießbilder", in den 1960er Jahren durch ihre großformatigen "Nanas" bekannt. Mit expressiven, auffälligen und dabei oft fragilen Assemblagen und Installationen trug sie zum veränderten, aktivistischen Kunstbegriff der Nachkriegszeit bei.

Genders and Sexualities in History

This book analyzes the relation between the Churches’ official teachings regarding ‘desired’ and forbidden forms of sexual behaviour on the one hand, and mundane practice on the other hand, focusing on perspectives ‘from below’. Since the very beginning, Christianity has sought to regulate the love lives of its believers. The clergy’s growing influence on state institutions and the introduction of Christian sexual ethics left its mark on law, education and social norms. However, the everyday lives of most believers had little in common with the sexual norms propagated by clerics. The territory of Poland is especially interesting due to the fact that over the centuries different Christian confessions as well as distinct ethnic groups with various cultural norms co-existed there. Additionally, this edited collection looks at different groups of actors, such as peasants, the clergy or townspeople from the Early Middle Ages until the late twentieth century, and also includes different types of sources as well as of methodological approaches. This long-term perspective shows the impact and influence of Church teachings in a longue durée, and highlights social factors that both shaped discourses on sexuality and also indicated the changing power of the Church.
