In this book, readers will learn learn about the equity and ethical&nbsp;issues associated with the practice of medical tourism in the Caribbean. Never before has a book discussed medical tourism with an exclusive focus on the opportunities&nbsp;and challenges it poses in the Caribbean region. As a region heavily dependent on tourism for economic sustainability, many Caribbean nations are looking to diversify their tourism sectors through involvement in medical tourism. In nine chapters, the book examines medical tourism through the lens of the Caribbean region to understand how and why this offshoring sector is unfolding in the way is and to consider who benefits from and is harmed by this global health services practice.&nbsp; This book is based on the author's first-hand research throughout the Caribbean region. The chapters are framed around specific insights she has gleaned&nbsp;about how medical tourism is unfolding in the region and its ethical&nbsp;and&nbsp;implications. Chapter 1 gives an overview of the global health services practice of medical tourism, and briefly introduces readers to the Caribbean region. Chapter 2 offers criticisms about the reliability of the information made available about medical tourism, not just in the Caribbean but also globally. Chapters 3 through 7 examine the complexities associated with competition&nbsp;between countries, the movement of locals and tourists between islands, the intersection of medical tourism and mobilities such as offshore medical schools, and the networks of impact resulting from the rise of medical tourism. Chapters 8 and 9 introduce the idea that there are 'winners' and 'losers' associated with medical tourism throughout the Caribbean region and that there is complexity with determining who falls into which group. This book will be of interest to students, academics, researchers, and policy makers involved with medical geography, global health, and health policy.&nbsp;

Medical Tourism in the Caribbean Region

This open access contributed volume is the first to address Social Determinants of Health (SDoH) from a place-based perspective with a transdisciplinary, global outlook. In this open access book, experts from geography, public health, urban planning, sociology, architecture, and more respond to growing calls for action on SDoH to improve health outcomes and promote health equity. Through theoretical considerations and case studies, the book explores how a spatial perspective influences, expands, and enriches understanding of SDoH across different scales and applications. Failing to account for patterns of structural health factors using an explicitly spatial approach can lead to biased, misinterpreted, or incomplete analyses. Adopting a geographic, place-based perspective remains crucial for SDoH studies from theoretical, analytical, and technological standpoints.&nbsp;The chapters in this book highlight areas needing further attention, such as spatial mismatch in health services, the complexities of social and spatial networks, and the impact of government policies on health disparities. Guided by SDoH frameworks, the book is divided into the sections on conceptualizing Social-Spatial Determinants of Health (S&amp;SDoH), integrating S&amp;SDoH in practice, methodological approaches and techniques for measuring S&amp;SDoH, and empirical illustrations of S&amp;SDoH.

Place and the Social-Spatial Determinants of Health

This volume presents a timely collection of research papers on the progress, opportunities, and challenges related to the advancement of geospatial technologies for applications in urban health research and management. The chapter authors cover technologies ranging from traditional GIS and remote sensing technologies, to recently developed tracking/locational technologies and volunteered geographic information (VGI). In four main sections, the book uniquely contributes to the conversation of how geospatial technologies and other GIScience research may be enhanced by addressing the data and challenges presented by urban health issues. The book is intended for those with backgrounds in health and medical geography, social epidemiology, urban planning, health management, and lifestyle research.The book starts with an introduction by the editors, providing an overview of traditional and emerging geospatial technologies and how they each can significantly contribute to urban health studies. Section 1 covers urban health risk and disease, and analyses the spatial and temporal patterns of selected urban health issues. Section 2 addresses urban health service access, and demonstrates how traditional and new geospatial technologies apply to different segments of urban populations facing varied challenges. Section 3 focuses on incorporating geospatial technologies in promoting healthy behaviours and lifestyles in urban settings. Section 4 assesses how geospatial technologies may be incorporated into urban health policies and management practices. Adopting a forward-looking perspective, these papers examine the various health challenges in urban systems, and explore how new and emerging geospatial technologies will need to develop to address these problems.&nbsp;

Geospatial Technologies for Urban Health

This new health atlas of Japan presents a series of maps about the health of the contemporary Japanese population, i.e. detailed maps of health indicators in small areas using cartograms. This is the first comprehensive&nbsp;small-area based health atlas about contemporary Japan using vital statistics from 1995-2014. Each map is supplemented with concise explanations written by leading epidemiologists and health geographers in Japan. The book employs various cutting-edge methods in spatial epidemiology, Bayesian spatial smoothing for the reliable mapping of mortality indices,&nbsp; advanced cartographic transformations using the concept of aerial cartograms, and summary statistics of socioeconomic health inequalities. The atlas highlights geographical aspects of social gradients in health by comparing mortality maps with distribution of deprivation index&nbsp;during the recent long-lasting economic stagnation period of Japan known as the lost decades. This health atlas will be a usefulresource for international comparisons between Japan and other advanced countries in terms of health and related socioeconomic disparities between regions. It will be of interest to public health practitioners, administrators, researchers and students working on health geography and public health.

The Atlas of Health Inequalities in Japan

This book brings readers the first scientific publication, using a mixed-method approach, on the internal migration dynamics regarding disease ecologies of informality and the interactions between social capital, lifestyles, health literacy, and health outcomes in the context of informal settlements in two developing countries - Ghana and Uganda. Through the prism of the concepts of place and scale, the book demonstrates the myriad of ways by which place or context directly and indirectly influence migrant's health knowledge, literacy, and outcomes in poor urban slums. Readers will learn about the multi-faceted linkages between social capital, acculturation, and health in places of deprivation via quantitative methods (e.g. surveys) and qualitative methods such as focus group discussions, in-depth interviews, concept mapping, and body health mapping.&nbsp; Chapters 1-2 provide an overview of internal migration into urban slums of Ghana and Uganda, and discuss the intersections between migration, social capital, and health in a global context. Chapters 3-7 address disease patterns, environmental risks to health, health literacy of migrants, social capital and acculturation, and social capital and health. The book will be of interest to professors and students, as well as policy makers in low to middle income countries for planning targeted interventions.&nbsp;
