An Introduction to the Soviet Legal System (1969) sets the main features of modern Soviet law against their background in Russian legal history and Marxist political thought. We are living in a period of global volatility in which intersecting crises are combining with devastating impacts for people already living in and near poverty. This book analyzes the legal tensions that exist in the economy that purports to "reanimate" the dead using postmortem digital technologies. Technological reanimation has proven to be big business, with many notable commercial entities investing in this "afterlife economy". Postmortem technologies convincingly replicate the appearance, physiognomy, conversation styles, and thought patterns of a deceased individual by generating digital copies that act in their stead. In the entertainment industry, new works can be created with dead celebrities through a postmortem copy that is managed by their representatives. The result is an economy in which the dead are offered as a product or service to consumers, with some having their artistic legacies extended past death through an "afterlife career". Many stakeholders stand to benefit from such a lucrative afterlife economy, but the law is simply not prepared for the issues that will arise with this exploitation of the dead. Reanimation requires the exploitation of one's reputation, persona, artistic works, and personal data. However, the corresponding legal protections are either nonexistent, inapplicable, or inconsistent across borders - depending on which posthumous interest is analyzed. In response, and by studying the contours of the existing legal protections in the afterlife economy, this book proposes a system rooted in the "shared ownership" of one's postmortem copy and the responsible "stewardship" of legacies through fiduciary duties.Law and the Digital Reanimation of the Dead will be of considerable interest to scholars working in the areas of entertainment law, intellectual property, and law and technology, as well as others with professional interests in the area.

This is the first comprehensive analysis of Southeast Asian globalization and development since 1870. Interpreting over 150 years of Southeast Asian economic history, Gregg Huff traces the impact of a first period of globalisation from the 1870s to 1929, the effects of Japanese occupation during World War II and its aftermath, and a second wave of globalisation since the late 1960s. He uses vent-for-surplus, dual economy and plural society concepts and argues that the response of those in Southeast Asia to periods of transport revolutions, innovation and opportunity in the world economy translated into rapid export-led growth. Methoden der Ausstellungsanalyse

This book provides an in-depth analysis of the reintroduction and recovery of the Mexican wolf in the American Southwest, with a particular focus on the role of the Federal judiciary. Edward A. Fitzgerald contends that federal courts have played a critical role in facilitating the species' return, primarily through their interpretation of statutory law - most notably, the Endangered Species Act (ESA). The courts rejected challenges from the livestock industry, reaffirmed Federal authority over the recovery process, and struck down certain Federal regulations that hindered effective wolf management. However, Fitzgerald argues that the judiciary also made significant missteps. Federal courts upheld revised Mexican wolf management regulations and recovery plans that failed to meet the ESA's requirement to rely on the "best available science." Additionally, the courts issued inconsistent rulings concerning the construction of border barriers. While they blocked the Trump administration's unauthorized transfer of funds for wall construction, they repeatedly and erroneously upheld the Secretary of Homeland Security's waiver authority. This authority permitted border wall construction to proceed in violation of Federal, state, and local laws - actions Fitzgerald claims exceeded statutory limits and violated the nondelegation doctrine. Providing a comprehensive and detailed examination of the legal challenges surrounding the Endangered Species Act and the recovery of the Mexican gray wolf, this book will be of interest to legal scholars, policymakers, and conservation advocates.

In challenging Eurocentric histories and accounts of international law, this book introduces an alternative history of pre-independence India.Western scholars trace the genesis of international law to Europe. However, scholars from the Global South trace the history of international law to different civilisations of the world existing since ancient times. They argue that European narratives are not sufficient to explain the true history of international law and that the history of international law should shed itself of its Eurocentrism and adopt a multi-civilisational perspective, according to which local and national histories can contribute towards a truly global history and in so doing enhance the legitimacy of international law. Taking up this perspective, the author traces the history of key elements of international law - such as diplomacy, trade and war - in and to pre-independent India.
