Während der Mainstream der Entwicklungspolitik ganz wesentlich auf wirtschaftliches Wachstum ausgerichtet war, fordert die nachhaltige Entwicklungspolitik eine Zusammenführung der drei Dimensionen Ökologie, Ökonomie und Soziales. Ein weiteres konstitutives Merkmal nachhaltiger Entwicklung ist die intra- und intergenerationelle Gerechtigkeit.
In der Neuauflage wurde der Ansatz des Neokolonialismus aufgenommen, der gegenwärtig ausführlich diskutiert wird.
