A definitive scholarly edition of the correspondence and papers of Thomas JeffersonThe Senate confirms John Armstrong and James Bowdoin as commissioners to negotiate with Spain and James Monroe and William Pinkney to do the same with Great Britain. In speeches in the House of Representatives, John Randolph attacks the administration's measures and declares that the president has lost the confidence of the cabinet. Jefferson shrugs this off, maintaining that Randolph can pull away only a few Republicans. In the approaches to New York harbor, a shot from a British warship causes the death of an American mariner. Jefferson issues a proclamation that calls for the apprehension of Henry Whitby, the captain of the warship, and bars his ship and others with it from American ports and waters. Congress passes an act to limit the navy to 925 seamen, capping the number of ships and raising Jefferson's concerns in light of a potential war with Tunis. He plans to use gunboats and militia to protect Orleans Territory in the event of conflict with Spain. Aaron Burr calls on him and hints that he could do "much harm." Jefferson's mentor George Wythe dies by poisoning, leaving Jefferson his books. Jefferson plans and begins to lay out the large garden for vegetables at Monticello.

Transatlantic Monarchisms in the Americas and Europe, 1812-1868

This book examines 'womanhood' and 'race' not only as disputed, converging, and constantly changing categories and lived experiences, but also as interrelated and unequal subjectivities and social realties that shaped all early-twentieth century Puerto Ricans. It empirically documents just how significantly 'womanhood' and 'race' were inextricably intertwined in Puerto Rico between 1914 and 1945, a decisive period in U.S. expansionism and in the transformation of this island. Through a comparative analysis and description of specific subjects in early-twentieth century Puerto Rico—mostly Puerto Ricans from different races and social classes, but also some North Americans as well—the book demonstrates the extent to which 'womanhood' and 'race' are a more thorny, volatile, and unstable than is commonly acknowledged within Women’s History and Caribbean Studies. This is the first book that examines the relationships between women in Puerto Rico from divergent social classes and racialized positions by mostly focusing on the socioeconomic and racial inequalities among colonized women in Puerto Rico. This is in marked contrast with most Women’s History globally which mainly concentrates either on the lives of elite women or, at best, on the unequal relationships between colonizer- and/or European-descended women vis-à-vis colonized- and/or non-white women. In this book 'womanhood' and 'race' are not seen as separate, nor as already given, historically and culturally immutable 'things.’ Those are some of the lacunae this book transcends, primarily in the case of white-Creole women relative to non-white Island women and the images socially constructed of them in Puerto Rico, as well as for racially located Puerto Ricans more broadly. Within this context, the book enables a different reading of already known documents while demonstrating the importance of examining unused or forgotten bibliographical sources, some of them previously untranslated.Gladys M. The story of John Dunn Hunter's remarkable life, tragic betrayal, and disgraceful murder.John Dunn Hunter was many things: a frontier hero, a writer, a celebrity at home and abroad, and, ultimately, the victim of a deadly conspiracy. Born to white parents in 1800, he was captured as a young child by the Kickapoo and later raised by the Kansa and then the Osage. As a young man, he left his Osage family and crossed the Mississippi into the United States, where he became an ardent and persuasive voice in favor of Indigenous sovereignty in the face of western expansion and the removal of native populations. In this gripping biography, Andy Doolen chronicles Hunter's compelling life and disgraceful murder. Often referred to as the "white Indian," Hunter published a gripping account of his life story and held court with esteemed figures of his day, from Presidents Jefferson and Madison to the Duke of Sussex and visionary reformer Robert Owen. But advocating for the rights of Indigenous people and nations painted a target on his back. Officials in the War Department accused him of being an imposter and the author of a hoax, but Hunter never had the chance to defend himself. He was in Texas at the time, one of the leaders in a pan-Indian movement for sovereignty, when he was assassinated in the infamous Fredonian Rebellion. Although Hunter could not have known it at the time, he was at the vanguard of a movement for an inclusive vision of democracy that embraced Indigenous rights and humanity rather than excluding and denying them. Hunter's story is a stark reminder of the work that still must be done to fulfill the promises of the American experiment.
