A Political Economy of Sovereign Wealth Funds in the Middle East and Asia

No doubt South Korea's neoliberalization has been closely influenced by the ideologies, policies, and experiences of the precedingly neoliberal West, but neoliberal shifts in the South Korean context have most critically conflated with the conditions and structures of its own distinctive developmental political economy and life world. Over nearly four decades of apparent neoliberal transitions, the country is now simultaneously neoliberal, developmental, neoliberally developmental, and developmentally neoliberal. Such complexities and contradictions are systematically analyzed in this transdisciplinary volume written by leading analysts of South Korea and beyond. They exhaustively cover the political, economic, social, and cultural dimensions of South Korea's neoliberalization in conjunction with its earlier developmental order and latest all-front restructuring.

Economic Restructuring, Social Precarity, and Post-Developmental Democracy

Neoliberalization of South Korea

This study traces the welfare regimes of Mauritius and South Africa from the early 20th century focusing on the historical circumstances that gave rise to the dominance of state-funded old-age pensions within their respective welfare frameworks. It highlights intersections between powerful business interests, the state, and social forces that sowed the seeds of social entitlements. Due to different mobilisation efforts of these social actors, both countries have spawned welfare regimes of different persuasions. Mauritius has maintained its long-standing traditions as a social democracy stretching back to the late 1950s, while South Africa continues relentlessly in pursuit of a liberal welfare state, a journey it has treaded since 1928 when the old-age pension laws first came into effect. While unravelling the innermost workings of welfare state development in Mauritius and South Africa, it also probes the present political and economic circumstances that have kept these two welfare regimes resolutely unchanged. Against this backdrop, it draws parallels between current welfare outcomes and those of old as they continue to chart their way into the future. Elias Phaahla, Ph.D. taught at the University of Cape Town (UCT) before joining University of Johannesburg where he is Associate Professor of Politics and International Relations. His main research interests include, but not limited to, the politics of welfare reform with particular focus placed on the old-age pension schemes of Mauritius and South Africa. The Political Economy of Divergent Welfare States in the Global South

This book addresses two of the most relevant yet understudied questions in field of International Political Economy (IPE): 1) what explains the trade policy preferences of the organizations that represent economic producers in the political sphere?; and 2) how they are formed? Specifically, it focuses on the evolution of the preferences of industry peak organizations in Brazil and Argentina, the National Confederation of Industry (CNI) -and the Sao Paulo Federation of Industries (FIESP) - in the first case, and the Argentine Industrial Union (UIA) in the second, regarding Mercosur's preferential trade agreements (PTA) negotiation agenda between 2010 and 2020. The book seeks to move forward debates on postsecularity as conceived by Habermas et.al. which recognise that, contrary to secular expectations, religion persists. The study is unique in exploring the irruptions (external breakthroughs) that unsettle secularisation and which give rise to postsecularisation. This shift has rendered sociology vulnerable to some unexpected theological considerations, some of which are explored in the study. Topics considered in the study, which make it accessible, include: dilemmas of naming; emotions and the visual; martyrdom and theodicy. Each of these has irruptive properties that force sociology to reconsider its theological debts. Postsecularity has become a fashionable term, but one which needs to be fleshed out and this study grasps a moment of opportunity to do so, which renders it original.
