In this concise but stimulating book on history and Greek culture, Hans-Joachim Gehrke continues to refine his work on 'intentional history', which he defines as a history in the self-understanding of social groups and communities - connected to a corresponding understanding of the other - which is important, even essential, for the collective identity, social cohesion, political behaviour and the cultural orientation of such units. In a series of four chapters Gehrke illustrates how Greeks' histories were consciously employed to help shape political and social realities. The book seeks to move forward debates on postsecularity as conceived by Habermas et.al. which recognise that, contrary to secular expectations, religion persists. The study is unique in exploring the irruptions (external breakthroughs) that unsettle secularisation and which give rise to postsecularisation. This shift has rendered sociology vulnerable to some unexpected theological considerations, some of which are explored in the study. Topics considered in the study, which make it accessible, include: dilemmas of naming; emotions and the visual; martyrdom and theodicy. Each of these has irruptive properties that force sociology to reconsider its theological debts. Postsecularity has become a fashionable term, but one which needs to be fleshed out and this study grasps a moment of opportunity to do so, which renders it original.

Ayurveda, Spirituality and Healing examines the changes undergone by the South Asian health-care tradition, Ayurveda, as a result of its assimilation into the Western holistic health milieu over the last four decades. It explores the ways in which the mind-body-spirit sector in the West, with its focus on seekership, spirituality, and self-empowerment through self-understanding, shapes Ayurveda's interpretation, promotion and practice in modern transnational Anglophone contexts. As with other Eastern traditions that have gained popularity in the West in recent times, 'globalised' Ayurveda has generated a host of competing discourses on what constitutes 'authentic' tradition, and whether Western forms of this tradition can be considered legitimate. This book makes a unique contribution to the scholarship on the subject by arguing that the new forms of Ayurveda in the Western holistic health milieu must be taken seriously, not dismissed as 'inauthentic', or measured against traditional South Asian forms of Ayurveda. These new manifestations reflect the particular concerns of 'alternative' health practitioners in late-capitalist contexts in the West, who draw upon this tradition in creative and expedient ways to address the perceived needs of their times.

The war in the Far East from 1939 to 1945, as witnessed first-hand by Scottish soldier and celebrated documentarian Harry BirrellFrom the moment he received a cine-camera at age 10, Harry Birrell devoted his life to documenting the world around him, including his enlistment and his adventures serving in the Burma, Nepal and India. Not only did he capture the war as he saw it, but he kept copious diaries from 1939 to 1945 so that his family would know what he had experienced in the event of his death. These unique record of the campaign are compelling, insightful, funny, charming, moving - all in equal measure. As a soldier posted with the Gurkhas for most of the war, Harry Birrell worked as a surveyor, mapping out the country as the war with the Japanese ebbed and flowed around him. While this might seem like it was away from any action, the job of creating these references for the fighting part of the army was critical and required him to be at the front line in order that the troops and their commanders had the most up to date and accurate maps as the war evolved. As a result, he has an unusual insider overview of that brutal campaign as well as wonderful insight into the Gurkhas under his command.
