Lee J: The Golden Hoops

The Golden Hoops

In collaboration with the estate of Bill Traylor, this publication offers a comprehensive look at the self-taught artist’s distinctive imagery, which mixes subjects and iconography from the American South with a strong formalistic treatment of color, shape, and surface.Born into slavery, Traylor spent much of his life after the 1863 Emancipation Proclamation working as a farm laborer in rural Alabama and, later, as a shoemaker and factory worker in Montgomery. In 1939, at approximately the age of 85, having never previously trained or studied art in any formal way, Traylor began making drawings and works on paper using gouache and other media. Though he continued to make art for the remainder of his life, Traylor was most prolific between 1939 and 1942, creating a body of work that offers a unique and rich registry of his life, experience, and insights.This monograph weaves beautiful reproductions of Traylor’s works with essays by and conversations with his descendants, offering a unique and deeply personal look at this artist whose work exists in the collections of many notable institutions in the United States but whose story has never been fully told.

Black Food, Nourishment, and the Art of Togetherness

Published to coincide with an exhibition of the same name, Black Gold showcases recent and newly commissioned artworks reflecting on the resilience, struggles, and triumphs of African Americans who lived in California during its early statehood, from the Gold Rush in 1848 to the Reconstruction era.The project highlights figures and events often omitted from California's history, including the presence of slavery and the struggle for legal rights within this "free" state, the successes of Black entrepreneurs, and the experiences of the African American army regiments known as the Buffalo Soldiers.Black Gold brings together an essay by the exhibitions curator, Cheryl Haines; an artist roundtable discussion moderated by Key Jo Lee, chief of curatorial affairs and public programs, Museum of the African Diaspora, San Francisco, CA; new and archival materials addressing California's hidden history of slavery and anti-Black legislation; and texts detailing the contributions of each of the exhibitions artists—including&nbsp;Akea Brionne, Demetri Broxton, Adrian L. Burrell, the artists of Creativity Explored, Adam Davis, Cheryl Derricotte, Carla Edwards, Mildred Howard, Sir Isaac Julien CBE, Tiff Massey, Umar Rashid, Trina Michelle Robinson, Alison Saar, Yinka Shonibare CBE, Bryan Keith Thomas, Cosmo Whyte, and Hank Willis Thomas.Led by the FOR-SITE Foundation, Black Gold will be on view at San Francisco's historic Fort Point from June 4-November 1, 2025.

A hard-hitting exploration of how state policy displaces and isolates Black communities and how collective resistance creates spaces for working-class people of color to identify the true cause of conflict as capitalism and white supremacy 
 
Marginalized communities often become understandably preoccupied with a city's structured attempt to deem them disposable, making it difficult to see people experiencing the same suffering as potential comrades in struggle. Enemies are manufactured as the result of continued displacement, hyper-segregation, and dispossession. Under these impossible circumstances people are often quicker to punch each other before they identify the enemy as white supremacy and capitalism, creating a society where conflict is engineered. 
 
Examining the long fight of Black people in Chicago to claim their humanity and thrive in a city while facing school closings, the destruction of public housing and oppressive law enforcement, Stovall argues that marginalized communities face unique structural challenges while being blamed for interpersonal conflict and labeled "violent" and deemed disposable. With a novel approach to the question of how state-sanctioned violence and abandonment impacts low-income communities,&nbsp;Engineered Conflict&nbsp;uses examples from Chicago's recent history to shed light on the politics of disposability through housing instability, criminalization, and school closures. Looking at all three phenomena together allows readers to see how state policies designate some neighborhoods as unviable, where disinvestment furthers a rationale to contain members of these communities. 
 
Looking at the many ways Black communities have resisted state violence and the work of local organizations to address marginalization,&nbsp;Engineered Conflict&nbsp;calls for a powerful movement against the displacement, disinvestment, and disposability of Chicago's Black population.
