State Capture through Media Clientelism in Serbia and Bosnia and Herzegovina: Challenges to Normative Power Europe contributes to the understanding of the rise of stabilitocracies and competitive authoritarian regimes in the Western Balkans by examining the case of freedom and independence of the media.State capture is explored through freedom of the media and capture of media outlets by the government in two candidates for European Union (EU) accession-Serbia and Bosnia and Herzegovina. The book argues that this is a consequence of the very process of EU accession-vis-à-vis its democracy-promotion strategy-which has created the unintended consequences of state capture and rent-seeking. Rather than democratic institution-building, geopolitical interests such as the recent Russian war in Ukraine, Kosovo, lithium in Serbia and the migrant crisis have all been the catalysts for democratic backsliding. This rise of state capture and media clientelism thus challenges the very idea of Normative Power Europe (NPE) as an exporter of democratic values and norms to third-world countries. Utilizing a range of interviews (with journalists, media experts, scholars of media studies and politicians) and documentary analysis of secondary and primary sources, the book asks whether we can observe a similar trend of state capture-specifically political clientelism vis-à-vis the media-in the newly emerging illiberal democracies in the Balkans as a novelty, or if lessons can be drawn from EU members in the post-accession phase. It also discusses whether the political culture in both Bosnia and Serbia shaped their media environments and contributed to an overall government pervasiveness in the media sphere that is unique to that particular region as opposed to the EU Member States, and what recommendations the EU needs to consider in order to promote media freedom in the Western Balkan applicants without endangering basic democratic norms.State Capture through Media Clientelism in Serbia and Bosnia and Herzegovina will be of great interest to students and scholars of EU and European studies, political science and media studies.

Why elite Chinese women find themselves caught in a cycle of burnout. Burnout Market Feminism explores the lives of elite urban businesswomen in the Internet Age. Burnout market feminism combines Han Byung-Chul's concept of the Burnout Society and feminist Li Xiaojiang's market feminism theory. To unravel the puzzle of how women in China have thrived in business despite state crackdowns on feminism, Ling Tang argues that it is important to examine the role of the market in postsocialist China and the evolving interplay between illiberal politics and a neoliberal economy. Drawing on multisited ethnography conducted primarily in Shenzhen and Hefei during the Xi era, the author looks at the multiplicity and nuance of the lived experiences of businesswomen and their negotiations with patriarchy across different sociocultural contexts, particularly their confrontations with hetero-patriarchal intimacy norms and male-dominated guanxi business practices. Despite following diverse paths, these women share a common pursuit of achievement and growth—a pursuit that paradoxically narrows their market feminist efforts and leads to burnout, as these negotiations are often reduced to contingent bargains within a neoliberal framework. The book also extends the discussion of burnout beyond that framework, incorporating feminist critiques of women’s burnout under patriarchy and postcolonial critiques of burnout within a rhetorically socialist authoritarian state.

Deshalb stammen die Autoren dieses Buches aus unterschiedlichsten fachlichen Sphären und beleuchten das Thema aus ihrer jeweils ganz eigenen Sachexpertise. Behandelt wird die KI in einzelnen Sektoren, namentlich im justiziellen, sicherheitsbehördlichen, medizinischen sowie psychologisch-therapeutischen Bereich. Die KI-Technologie selbst wird anhand ihrer Halluzinationen sowie der synthetischen Kommunikation zwischen Künstlichen Intelligenzen thematisiert. Dargestellte Möglichkeiten der KI-Risikomitigation umfassen die außerstaatliche Regelsetzung ebenso wie das Konzept eines Computerprogramms, das Verhaltensweisen von Künstlichen Intelligenzen überwachen soll. Das Verhältnis des Menschen zur KI ist Thema von Untersuchungen zu autonomen Künstlichen Intelligenzen und menschlichem Entscheidungshandeln. This book responds to the need to distinguish human creations from those produced by AI. It does so by tracing human attributes of authorship and inventorship in statutory requirements for protection and ownership in European copyright and patent laws. Its main contribution lies in exposing shortcomings in how the laws are applied in the UK, Germany, and France. It shows that the human origin of creations is traditionally inferred from their expressive form or technical character. Given the advancements in AI, such inferences are no longer legitimate. What is more, these shortcomings may eventually lead to granting copyright or patent protection where none is lawfully permitted or sufficiently justified. To remedy the situation, this book offers doctrinal and conceptual amendments and proposes law reforms to implement them. This book guides authorities, practitioners, and students through the main arguments of the debate concerning copyright and patents for objects entirely or partly generated by AI.
