The Divining Season

The Divining Season

The town of Larissa, Texas, has secrets. Local Native American girls are going missing, but the town residents seem to grieve for more than these recent losses. Eleven-year-old Emily Howard, who has just moved back to town with her adoptive mother, finds herself bridging Larissa's past and present as she begins to unearth the secret griefs that haunt the town: Emily's mother and aunt reckon with a decades old family rift originating in the mystery of Cedar House, the scene of a horrific act of domestic violence. The Howards' maid, Candice is forced to confront the duality of her cultural heritage when the missing girls make her question her own identity. And finally, Bettye Donald, working with the local police, finds herself more a part of the investigation into the missing girls than she ever expected to be. At the center of it all is Emily, whose ancestors start appearing to her, causing her to question the world she knows and her place in it. This story follows Emily and the women around her as they grapple with the disappearances, reckoning with their own pasts as they grieve both individual and collective losses..
