T&T Clark New Studies in Bonhoeffer’s Theology and Ethics

This volume draws together a selection of high-quality presentations at the 13th International Bonhoeffer Congress held in January 2020 in Stellenbosch, South Africa. The theme of the conference was "How a coming generation is to go on living? Bonhoeffer and the response to our present crisis and hope." The selected essays engage thoroughly and creatively with this concern to take responsibility not only for our own personal and communal life in all of its complexity and richness but also for the ethos and society that future generations will inherit from us. The pertinence of Bonhoeffer's question is addressed in these contributions anew as we experience threats on a global level to socio-political, economic and inter-religious stability and solidarity. Attention is also given to some important challenges experienced in the so-called global South, and the reality of climate change and ecological devastation implies that the question of how future generations are going to go on living is linked to the fact that we live on a planet that is in jeopardy. Also included as an appendix is the powerful sermon preached by the South African Anglican archbishop of Cape Town Thabo Makgoba at the opening worship service of the congress.

Simon Perry contributes a new addition to the renowned Black's New Testament Commentary series, with his new work on the Gospel of St. Luke. The key questions for scholars and students of Luke are comprehensively scrutinized, with examinations of questions of historicity, the use of historical traditions and sources, the relationship of Luke to other Gospel books in the New Testament, and its reception. Commonly known as Dalits, or Untouchables, Paraiyar Christians are a large socially marginalised group living in India within a dynamic and complex social matrix dominated by the caste system. This book presents a detailed exploration of Paraiyar communities, focusing on their religious and cultural identity and examining their worldview within the dominant 'Hindu' religious worldview. Exploring Dalits' wider social context and boundaries, ascribed and achieved identity, and the use of religious symbolism and ritual, this book highlights various tensions and areas of creativity among Paraiyar Christians and how they negotiate their lives within a hierarchical system. Anderson Jeremiah argues that the category 'religion' is inadequate, and he sheds light on the complexity of religious belief in marginalised indigenous communities. This inter-disciplinary, socio-ethonographic study of Dalit Christian community presents a significant anthropological study of Christianity as it is lived out in the grass roots of a marginalised society.

George Ivanovitch Gurdjieff (c.1866-1949) is acknowledged as one of the most influential early teachers of a hybridised Eastern-Western esoteric spiritual tradition, and one of a few key influences on the contemporary New Age Movement and a myriad other alternative spiritualities and new religions. Positioning Gurdjieff's teachings within the field of New Religious Movements, this book examines the 'Work' (as Gurdjieff's system is commonly called), including his teachings presented in writings, music, and exercises known as 'Movements'.
