What can one city tell us about the global textile waste problem? This Open Access study is the first detailed ethnography of clothing waste infrastructures that starts where the problem starts - the Global North. Based on more than 100 interviews, cultural anthropologist Heike Derwanz follows the journey of fast fashion in Hamburg, Germany: starting with two women from different socio-economic backgrounds sorting through their wardrobes, travelling through local flea markets, eBay, church clothes banks, upcycling brands and recycling sites, only to end up in homes and waste heaps in the Global South. Bringing together human agents such as designers, social workers and vintage sellers with objects from containers, plastic sacks and internet platforms to piles of sorted textiles, this on-the-ground cultural study reveals how the global economic system of fast fashion shapes local infrastructures entangled in everyday lives. Combining material culture, waste studies and economic perspectives to scrutinize the so-called circular economy of today's global textile recycling market, Derwanz investigates what agency modern consumers really have in the lifecycle of their clothes. This book offers the first full-length scholarly study of Sistren Theatre Collective, one of the most significant theatre companies in the history of Caribbean drama. It looks critically at Sistren's theatre productions and its community outreach programme, as well as its leading role in the Caribbean women's movement and its relationship with development agencies. The book charts Sistren's emergence, influence and transformation from a women's only theatre company to a mixed-gender non-governmental organization. Covering Jamaica's socio-political history since the island's Independence in 1962, this study places Sistren's work in the context of Jamaica's past as a plantation economy and the ongoing impact of colonialism and neocolonialism in Jamaican society. This book will appeal to scholars and students in the discipline areas of Caribbean Studies, Theatre Studies, Gender studies and Development Studies as well as activists and theatre practitioners.&nbsp; Karina Smith is Senior Lecturer in Literary and Gender Studies at Victoria University, Australia. This book examines 'womanhood' and 'race' not only as disputed, converging, and constantly changing categories and lived experiences, but also as interrelated and unequal subjectivities and social realties that shaped all early-twentieth century Puerto Ricans. It empirically documents just how significantly 'womanhood' and 'race' were inextricably intertwined in Puerto Rico between 1914 and 1945, a decisive period in U.S. expansionism and in the transformation of this island. Through a comparative analysis and description of specific subjects in early-twentieth century Puerto Rico—mostly Puerto Ricans from different races and social classes, but also some North Americans as well—the book demonstrates the extent to which 'womanhood' and 'race' are a more thorny, volatile, and unstable than is commonly acknowledged within Women’s History and Caribbean Studies. This is the first book that examines the relationships between women in Puerto Rico from divergent social classes and racialized positions by mostly focusing on the socioeconomic and racial inequalities among colonized women in Puerto Rico. This is in marked contrast with most Women’s History globally which mainly concentrates either on the lives of elite women or, at best, on the unequal relationships between colonizer- and/or European-descended women vis-à-vis colonized- and/or non-white women. In this book 'womanhood' and 'race' are not seen as separate, nor as already given, historically and culturally immutable 'things.’ Those are some of the lacunae this book transcends, primarily in the case of white-Creole women relative to non-white Island women and the images socially constructed of them in Puerto Rico, as well as for racially located Puerto Ricans more broadly. Within this context, the book enables a different reading of already known documents while demonstrating the importance of examining unused or forgotten bibliographical sources, some of them previously untranslated.Gladys M. Womanhood and Race in Interwar Puerto Rico

"Jodie Marley’s William Blake’s Mysticism takes us on an exuberant journey of spiritualities, ranging from Dorothy Gott, the prophetic writer he encountered in 1789, to “Fiona Macleod,” the visionary identity of W.B. Yeats’s friend, William Sharp". — David Worrall, Nottingham Trent University, UK.
This book examines William Blake as a ‘mystic’ and the movements and authors that contributed to this definition during and after his lifetime, with a particular focus on his influence on late nineteenth- and early twentieth-century Celtic Modernist writers. The author W. B. Yeats was one of the first to present this view of Blake in depth, although his concept of the mystic prioritised the lone male practitioner and the occult. This study argues that the mystic and the esoteric in a community context impacted both Blake’s, and Yeats’, critical and cultural reception. It also offers the first extended literary examination of the Romantic prophet Dorothy Gott’s work alongside Blake’s, and the first analysis of Blake’s influence on Celtic Modernist writers George Russell and Fiona Macleod. This book will be of interest to scholars interested in representations of gender and spirituality in Romantic and Modernist literature and art, and in authors so far neglected in Blake studies.
Jodie Marley is a researcher and writer whose work focuses on Romanticism, reception, mysticism, and gender. Her research bridges the Romantic and Modernist periods, with a particular focus on Irish Modernism. She is a 2025 visiting research fellow at the University of Glasgow’s Archives and Special Collections and won a British Association for Romantic Studies (BARS) Stephen Copley Award to fund her research in December 2024. She received her Ph.D. from the University of Nottingham in 2023.
She has forthcoming book chapters in The Routledge Companion to William Blake&nbsp;(ed. Freeman) and&nbsp;Seán O’Casey in Context&nbsp;(ed. Moran). She has previously been published in&nbsp;the Bulletin of the John Rylands Library,&nbsp;VALA, and&nbsp;Good Horoscope. Two of her talks for the Global Blake initiative are publicly available. In 2019 she co-curated the Romantic Facts and Fantasies exhibition at Lakeside Arts, Nottingham, and helped organise the 2019 BARS conference.
