This book explores the roles of land and housing in the China economic development. The real estate sector in China has two opposite effects on the urban economy. On one hand, it provides funds for urban development and on the other hand, its excessive expansion would depress the urban growth. To balance the two effects, the governments try to adjust their regulation policies dynamically. These policies to a great extent determine the rise and fall of urban economy. This book is divided in to four parts. The first part elaborates the relationship between the real estate sector and urban economy and explains the mechanism of the former’s impact on the later. The second part investigates the interaction of the real estate sector and the industrial sector and the consequences. The third part discusses the real estate tax reform and the affordable housing system. At the last part, I discuss the prospect of China real estate economy through the case of Evergrand’s debt crisis. The real estate sector is an essential part of China’s model of economic development, so this book will interest those readers who want to know the Chinese miracle of growth.Tan Rui

He was a research fellow at Institute of Public Policy, South China University of Technology, during 2014-2023. He earned his PhD in economics in Sun Yat-Sen University, Guangzhou. His research interest focuses on urban economics, comparative political economics, and industrial policy. He has published some books on these topics, includng

Land, Housing and the Model of Chinese economic development

This book is the first work to systematically study the development of large-size economies. From a completely new perspective, it defines and selects a set of representative large-size economies. It first analyzes the basic characteristics of large-size economies and the mechanisms behind economic growth, and then explores how a country’s scale shapes industrialization, urbanization, institutional change, and governance structures, describing a path for a major economy to an economic powerhouse. The book is selected for China’s National Achievements Library of Philosophy and Social Sciences and has made notable contributions to the development of China’s economic discourse system.

Governing China in the 21st Century

Since 2015, China has actively promoted “third-party market cooperation” as a new model of international economic engagement. This approach brings together China, advanced economies, and beneficiary countries to jointly develop infrastructure and construction projects, moving beyond traditional bilateral cooperation framework. Official narratives portray tripartite cooperation as a “triple-win” arrangement that combines China’s manufacturing capacity, partner countries’ advanced technologies, and the development needs of beneficiary countries. While such cooperation promises risk-sharing, resource complementarity, and enhanced project quality, it also introduces new challenges, including higher transaction costs, divergent governance practices, and complex negotiations among multiple actors.
Addressing the central question of why stakeholders choose tripartite cooperation and how three-party collaboration shapes project outcomes, the book makes both theoretical and practical contributions. It integrates transaction cost theory, international relations theory, foreign direct investment theory, and infrastructure natural monopoly theory to advance a novel concept of “semi-internalisation.” The analysis provides policymakers, practitioners, and scholars with a framework to understand partner selection, interest alignment, and the evolving dynamics of one of China’s significant yet understudied innovations in global economic cooperation

This book sorts out the causes, consequences and the evolution path of China's economic reform process from the historical dimension of China's economic policy changes, from which the long-standing contradictions and conflicts between the two different models can be seen throughout the process, i.e. the market economy and the state-dominated economy (e.g., Lenin's 'special state capitalism') as well as the potential risks that will be brought by the pause of market and law reform on China's economic and social development. This book attempts to answer the most fundamental questions of BRI by applying economic methods: What is, what to do, and how to do. Whether in China or the international community, whether in academia or in decision-making circles, there is no consensus on these issues, even though BRI has been around for eight years. As a result, there are many misunderstandings and suspicions about BRI, which have become a major obstacle to its smooth development. As an academic study, this book is not a simple interpretation of the official Chinese BRI representation, but an analysis of it is based on a unified theoretical framework. In addition to tracing the evolution of BRI and the cognition of the international community, the focus of this book is to analyze the attributes, positioning, and governance structure of BRI, as well as to discuss the internal and external risks it faces and its future development direction. The author starts from the development orientation of BRI (different from the current rule orientation of global governance) and makes a normative definition of it. Emphasizing development orientation does not mean that BRI does not need rules, but to jointly formulate rules according to the needs of development. Therefore, one of the directions to promote the high-quality development of BRI is institutionalization.

The Economic Analysis of Belt and Road

<div>This Palgrave Pivot concentrates on the development economics of Nepal, an LDC graduating landlocked country, from a macroeconomic perspective across eight chapters. Six of these chapters are interconnected contextually and serve as comprehensive research articles employing various quantitative techniques. Chapter One introduces Nepal and defines the scope of the publication. Next, an overview of the macroeconomic sector is provided, suggesting potential developmental trajectories for Nepal. Chapters Two through Seven systematically explore pivotal economic issues, including the nexus of remittances, bank credit to the private sector, trade deficits, governance quality and export performance in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, the interaction between the agricultural and manufacturing sectors for economic growth, revenue efficiency, the interrelation of democracy, governance quality, and economic growth, as well as export efficiency from a fiscal policy perspective. The concluding chapter synthesizes the findings and offers policy recommendations derived from the analyses.</div>

This book is authored by Chinese economist Yanan Wang. It provides a systematic analysis of the modern Chinese economy by adopting comprehensive, developmental, and comparative methodologies. The work elucidates the interconnections among key economic concepts—such as goods, value, money, capital, profit, interest, wages, rent, and panic—within the historical context of China’s semi-colonial society in 1946.Drawing on modern Chinese economic history, this book investigates how feudal economic remnants, perpetuated by Chinese landlords, impeded the development of modern national capitalism. By appropriately applying core theories of capital and employing dialectical materialism, the author guides the analysis from partial to holistic perspectives and from qualitative to quantitative approaches, thereby clarifying the complex economic phenomena of modern China.
