The Alien Ultimatum

What if aliens gave us just 365 days to create a just world?

This second edition of The Palgrave Handbook of Criminology and the Global South&nbsp;significantly expands, develops and draws together the rapidly growing research and theory about crime, punishment, security, prisons, policing, gender violence, environmental justice, island justice and justice innovations from, of and about the Global South. It addresses the hegemonic bias in the production and dissemination of criminological knowledge and covers a huge scope of research methodologies and lines of inquiry to develop a transnational criminology inclusive of the experiences and perspectives of the Global South. It includes Indigenous, critical, green, southern, feminist, counter-colonial, post-colonial and de-colonial approaches. It seeks to&nbsp;contribute to the bridging of global divides and reducing inequities with the aim to democratise criminological knowledges.

The Palgrave Handbook of Criminology and the Global South

It is part of the self-image of liberal democracies to critically examine their own historical actions. Document editions represent an important contribution to the preservation and exploration of our societies' historical heritage, to the documentary traceability and transparency of political processes, and - through further publications - to historical enlightenment and political education. The first series of Foreign Policy Documents of the Republic of Austria 1918-1938 (ADÖ-I), initiated in 1990 by Arnold Suppan with Klaus Koch and Walter Rauscher, was completed in 2016; the 12 volumes are now also available online. This first volume marks the beginning of the second series of Foreign Policy Documents of the Republic of Austria (ADÖ-II), which covers the period after the Second World War. The volume comprises 312 documents from the archives of the Federal Ministry for European and International Affairs and the Austrian State Archives in a text-critical and scholarly edition, including an introduction and index. It documents the period from mid-April 1945 to the end of May 1947. The volume focuses on the re-establishment of the Republic after liberation from National Socialism, the restoration of relations with foreign countries, particularly with the four occupying and controlling powers, the safeguarding of food supplies and the territorial integrity of the country, the struggle for South Tyrol's self-determination, and the regaining of full state sovereignty through a treaty. The volume concludes with the transitional phase between the failure of the Moscow Foreign Ministers' Conference on April 24, 1947, and the announcement of the US aid program for Europe, the Marshall Plan, on June 5.

Industrialized Construction in the Age of AI and Robotics

This collection explores the relationship between race, racism, and human rights law. It seeks to illuminate, in particular, how the European Court of Human Rights articulates the category of race, how human rights are experienced (differently) by racial minorities, and whether the European Convention on Human Rights has the tools to recognise and address racial harms. By centring race, it considers how Convention rights would look through the lens of race and ultimately interrogates if human rights law is part of the solution or part of the problem. In pursuing these inquiries, the collection brings together two fields of scholarship that have largely developed independently of each other, namely law and race, and European human rights law. This book is the first study to consider findings from sociology, legal anthropology, ethnology, legal pluralism, comparative law and theology in order to gain a better understanding of the diverse cultures of global Catholicism and the cross-cultural challenges arising from Roman Catholic canon law within the local churches. The author, renowned for her work at the intersection of socio-legal studies and canon law, examines the latter as a distinctive example of a European religious legal system that cuts across the myriad legal cultures of the local churches. In light of findings on legal transfer and legal colonialism, and by examining canon law within the emerging field of social and cultural studies approaches to law, her book sheds light on how canon law is imposed upon and received by the local churches around the world. It analyses the challenges and problems arising from the law’s transcultural claims within these churches. Based on these observations, the study discusses the critical stance of canon law within contemporary Catholicism and the current debates on a synodal reform of the church and its law.&nbsp; The book adopts different perspectives: As a sociological study, it describes the contemporary Eurocentrism of global canon law and the conflicts arising from it. As a theological study, it presents ecclesiological reasons for challenging the hegemony of global legislation. As a study of canon law, it suggests ways in which legislation could permit greater diversity while maintaining the unity of the universal church. By analysing canon law as a specific example of a religious legal order with cross-cultural ambitions and global claims, the book also contributes to the study of transnational law in general by illustrating the typical problems that accompany transnational legal regimes in both secular legal systems and religious groups.
