Emerging technologies such as autonomous vessels, artificial intelligence, and alternative fuels are revolutionizing the way we operate at sea. This volume examines how advancements in information technology and biotechnology are influencing the evolution of ocean law and policy. These technologies, including blockchain, satellite and submarine cable communications, nuclear power at sea, seabed mining, underwater archaeology, marine genetics, and decarbonization, are changing the architecture of ocean governance. This volume explores both the opportunities and challenges these advancements pose to the law of the sea, which is evolving to adapt to ever accelerating rates of global change. Palgrave Histories of Policing, Punishment and Justice

This book provides a comprehensive overview of police governance in England and Wales. This volume (I) starts from the Anglo Saxon period onwards. Volume II covers reform and development of tripartite governance from 1979-2025. These volumes analyse the key mechanisms and procedures that have sought to provide for the control and accountability of police organisations to external bodies and the means through which the conduct and work performed by police personnel is regulated internally. They discuss and evaluate the key debates and developments that have underpinned changes to police governance and the social, economic and political context within which these have emerged. They bring together a wide variety of material that relates to historical and contemporary aspects of policing. They draw upon primary (as well as secondary) source material including the use of historical documents for the early chapters. They speak to students taking courses in criminology and criminal justice studies and also those specialising in policing and to practitioners.

Governance of the Police in England and Wales, Volume I

The law codes in the Middle East North Africa (MENA) region are a well-crafted blend of civil and Islamic law in which civil law principles do not violate Islamic provisions. Yet, common law principles derived either from English common law or Islamic customary usages remain unidentified and thus ignored. Here, this complex scenario is rectified through a comparative analysis of the primary data (e.g. cases, statutes and arbitral award decisions), adding common law and uncodified Islamic custom to MENA law codes. The purpose of this comparative analysis is to allow common legal principles found in civil, common and Islamic law to be distilled in order to create a new, harmonised international commercial arbitration law code (HICALC) or uniform Arab arbitration law (UAAL) for adoption in the MENA region, where these principles already greatly influence the legal systems and can be readily assimilated into a harmonised or uniform code. The work demonstrates that this new code would lead to improved arbitral award enforcement in the MENA.

This book examines one of the most important questions in peace research: What leads to enduring peace after civil wars, and what leads to the resurgence of violence? For decades, intrastate conflicts have been the predominant form of armed conflict, and most recent civil wars were conflicts that recurred. The research presented in this book focuses on influenceable factors, first and foremost on the type of civil war termination and on the post-civil war order that is shaped by the distribution of military power between the former warring parties and the scale of political compromise. Moreover, it shows that the peacekeeping environment has a major influence on whether peace endures. The insights provided in this book are relevant for the academic community, and for decision-makers and practitioners involved in civilian or military efforts to establish and preserve peace.

This edited collection reflects the diversity of gender-based violence and presents new perspectives and expands current scholarship in global contexts. It considers behaviours and actions including digital, interpersonal and institutional violence which are not readily understood as violence but are experienced as inherently harmful. New Perspectives on Global Gender-Based Violence

This short, engaging book challenges the widely held belief that ‘classical liberalism’ is the original and authentic form of liberalism. The book argues that this narrative – often used to position libertarianism as the true liberal tradition and social democratic liberalism as a distortion – is built on historical misunderstandings of the terms ‘liberal’ and ‘liberalism’.
Focusing on English and American contexts, the book uses primary sources to show that the free-market doctrines of Adam Smith, later interpreted by thinkers like Hayek and Friedman as libertarian principles, should not be conflated with liberalism. Instead, liberalism first emerged in nineteenth-century England as a political philosophy rooted in constitutionalism and republicanism. The book also examines how Franklin D. Roosevelt reshaped American political language by associating "liberals" with New Deal supporters and "conservatives" with its opponents. By exploring these two pivotal moments and the broader political and economic history that connects them, de Marneffe redefines classical liberalism and critiques rigid interpretations of liberal thought. This book will appeal to scholars of politics, philosophy, economics, and the history of ideas.
