Through a re-examination of the theoretical study of time and embodiment, this collection proposes an innovative new discourse in which to situate film. Each of its essays, written by a host of renowned international scholars, demonstrate the embodiment of time to be a vital part of the aesthetic experience of cinema. Analysing a broad range of films such as Beasts of the Southern Wild (USA, 2012), Talk to Her (Spain, 2002), Millennium Actress (Japan, 2001), Jab Tak Hai Jaan (India, 2012), and Jinpa (China, 2018), they each draw specific attention to moments of change and transformation, so as to explore how films operate as dynamic carriers of social meaning. Contributors examine key questions of embodied time as represented on screen; as a way of rethinking the centrality of the individual, of depicting gendered differences, of decentring western perspectives to consider embodied time in a widened global context, and as a way of expanding what embodiment means in post-human narratives. In doing so, this study not only highlights specific discourses of radical, lived experience in film, but also considers how distinctions of race and class, gender and sexuality, migration, religion, and indigeneity affect these depictions of embodied subjectivity.

Blending folklore studies, media theory, horror criticism and cultural geography, this collection charts an unprecedented map of urbanlegend storytelling, from haunted cemeteries to pixelated backrooms. Across three themed sections, international scholars trace how tales of hookhanded killers and countless other spectres migrate through oral tradition, cinema, television, board games and video games, to continually reshape the fears and identities of the communities that share them. By foregrounding space the cemetery, the highway, the small town, the livestreamed haunted house as a dynamic agent rather than passive backdrop, the book reveals how legends build cultural memory, police social boundaries and critique neoliberal landscapes. Interdisciplinary, globally-scoped and mediaagnostic, this volume moves beyond folkloric catalogues and genre surveys to show precisely where horror lives today and why those locations matter.

This open access book investigates film studios in Britain, France, Germany and Italy between the 1930s and 1960s. During this time, studios faces unprecedented challenges including wartime disruptions, post-war fragmentation, movement of labour and the introduction of new technologies. While the study of film studios has been dominated by the centralized Hollywood 'studio system', the authors present new research about the often very different histories of Europe's film studios, comparing their geographic locations, architectures and infrastructural development. They explore a number of well-known studios including Pinewood, Joinville, Babelsberg and Cinecittà, as well as lesser-known production sites such as Manchester, Victorine, post-war West German studios and Tirrenia as diverse creative and economic infrastructures. Drawing on a wealth of archival sources, photographs, films, aerial maps and visualizations, the book charts how artistic practices responded to transnational flows in film studio expertise, as studios constituted formative, materially based 'spaces of the imagination' that produced some of cinema's most influential films. How studios worked in the past as dynamic, creative working environments that were profoundly influenced by their locations, architectures and personnel, is foregrounded as the authors produce new understandings of how the collaborative and material environments of studio spaces and technologies shaped film production and cultures. This book is a blueprint for artists looking to engage with activist movements with a persistent longevity and a reminder that art has the power to be more dangerous than words.
Front Lines: A Lifetime of Drawing Resistance is Susan Simensky Bietila's story of her six decades as a movement artist and activist and a lifetime of artistic collaborations rooted in her activist experience. Growing up during McCarthyism, she rejected the nationalist masculinity of elite art and conformist culture and found feminism and collectivism as new forms of resistance. She became an artist in the New Left, creating illustrations for radical underground publications including RAT, Subterranean News, and comics for the anarchic World War 3 Illustrated.
With more than one hundred images, Front Lines documents her art on the page and in action featuring protest banners and giant puppets of birds and fish carried in the streets, masks of notorious dictators for street theater, posters pasted on walls and hung in radical spaces, community art builds, and more. Visual storytelling and detailed captions contextualize and bring to life her work with movements including antiwar protests during the Viet Nam era, Indigenous led antimine and antipipeline struggles, water protection, immigrant rights, anticorporate globalization convening, protests against the state and capital, Palestinian liberation actions, and collaborations with groups throughout the Great Lakes region and beyond. She agitates from the roots and the front lines to this day.
