Tolkien's most important poetic dramas, that explores timely themes such as the nature of heroism and chivalry during war, and which features unpublished and never-before-seen texts and drafts.In 991 AD, vikings attacked an Anglo-Saxon defence-force led by their duke, Beorhtnoth, resulting in brutal fighting along the banks of the river Blackwater, near Maldon in Essex. The attack is widely considered one of the defining conflicts of tenth-century England, due to it being immortalised in the poem, The Battle of Maldon.Written shortly after the battle, the poem now survives only as a 325-line fragment, but its value to today is incalculable, not just as an heroic tale but in vividly expressing the lost language of our ancestors and celebrating ideals of loyalty and friendship.J.R.R. Tolkien considered The Battle of Maldon 'the last surviving fragment of ancient English heroic minstrelsy'. It would inspire him to compose, during the 1930s, his own dramatic verse-dialogue, The Homecoming of Beorhtnoth Beorhthelm's Son, which imagines the aftermath of the great battle when two of Beorhtnoth's retainers come to retrieve their duke's body.Leading Tolkien scholar, Peter Grybauskas, presents for the very first time J.R.R. Tolkien's own prose translation of The Battle of Maldon together with the definitive treatment of The Homecoming of Beorhtnoth and its accompanying essays; also included and never before published is Tolkien's bravura lecture, 'The Tradition of Versification in Old English', a wide-ranging essay on the nature of poetic tradition. Illuminated with insightful notes and commentary, he has produced a definitive critical edition of these works, and argues compellingly that, Beowulf excepted, The Battle of Maldon may well have been 'the Old English poem that most influenced Tolkien's fiction', most dramatically within the pages of The Lord of the Rings.

Poetry has always served as a mode of resistance in Palestinian culture. In defiance of dispossession and decades of military siege, of a nakba that never ended, of historical and cultural obfuscation, of unrelenting violence and thousands of martyred people, the "power to narrate," as Edward Said wrote, remains a necessary tool for self-determination. The poems collected here reclaim that power, bridging borders, languages, and generations to forge new conversations around resistance and liberation. 
 
HEAVEN LOOKS LIKE US is a battle-cry against the annihilation of a people. As Palestinian history remains haunted by exile, violence, and grief, so, too, are the poems in this anthology. And yet, editors George Abraham and Noor Hindi present these realities alongside other themes that are also true: queer and feminist perspectives, eco-poetry, meditations on love and time, and lineages of protest. This anthology dares to imagine a future beyond a nation-state for Palestinian people everywhere. Contributors include Refaat Alareer, Mahmoud Darwish, Naomi Shihab Nye, Mohammed El-Kurd, A.D. Lauren-Abunassar, Lena Khalaf Tuffaha, Hala Alyan, Fady Joudah, and Heba Abu Nada, and many other voices, both established and ascending.

"One of the most important and original poets of the twentieth century, May Swenson (1913-1989) was born in Utah to Swedish immigrant parents. After graduating from Utah State University and working briefly as a reporter, she moved to New York City in the mid-1930s and began her life as a poet. She took various office jobs to support herself, including time with the Federal Writers' Project and, later, as a manuscript reader for New Directions in the 1950s. Swenson went on to publish seven collections of poetry (with several more collections published posthumously), and three poetry books for children. Swenson's work is often compared to the poetry of E. E. Cummings and Elizabeth Bishop, with whom Swenson corresponded for decades. Her many awards include the Shelley Memorial Award, the Bollingen Prize, and the Award in Literature from the National Institute of Arts and Letters. She was a Chancellor of the Academy of American Poets from 1980 to 1989. This book provides an account of Swenson's life that draws on her extensive diaries, which have never been made available to the public. The narrative concentrates on Swenson's life from 1935 to 1959, a period that encompasses her departure from Utah, her personal and professional struggles before her first breakthrough publications, and her early years of literary success. The poet expresses her anxieties and aspirations as she experiments with her sexuality, extricates herself from a sheltered Mormon upbringing, and begins a new life in New York at the height of the Depression. The author traces Swenson's struggles with poverty, anonymity, and predatory men; her romantic relationships, primarily with women; the people she met, books she read, and the work she produced, offering a unique portrait of the times, the place, and a poet who resisted labels throughout her life"--
