Star Trek III: The Search for Spock - The Making of the Classic Film

Richard Schickel's study of Billy Wilder's 1944 noir classic Double Indemnity traces in fascinating detail the genesis and realisation of the film: its literary origins in James M. Cain's hard-boiled crime novel, the difficult relations between Wilder and his scriptwriter Raymond Chandler, the casting of a reluctant Fred MacMurray, and the late decision to cut the expensively filmed execution sequence from the final release. Schickel places Double Indemnity in the context of early 1940s Hollywood and the emergence of a new kind of crime thriller that later became known as film noir. The film was a cornerstone of the genre: its script creates two unforgettable criminal characters, the cynically manipulative femme fatale Phyllis Dietrichson (Barbara Stanwyck) and the likeable but amoral Walter Neff (Fred MacMurray). Billy Wilder's direction enmeshes them in dramatic chiaroscuro, as bright California sunlight casts Venetian-blind shadows across dusty rooms and harsh lamplight slices through the night. In his afterword to this new edition, James Naremore pays tribute to Schickel's analysis of Double Indemnity and its contexts, and considers debates surrounding the film's conclusion.

Double Indemnity

A classic of feminist avant-garde cinema, Laura Mulvey and Peter Wollen's Riddles of the Sphinx (1977) follows the life of Louise (Dinah Stabb), a white middle-class woman living in London in the 1970s, as she confronts the complex politics of motherhood, domestic labour and work. With a kaleidoscopic array of cinematic techniques and poetic devices, the film charts Louise's process as she questions her place within white patriarchal culture and finds her voice within the burgeoning Women's Liberation Movement. Reading Riddles as an essay film, Kimberly Lamm explores how it utilises voice, sound and writing to challenge Hollywood's dominant images of women and to portray maternal care as a legitimate form of work, rich in aesthetic pleasures and feminist possibilities. She examines the voice of the Sphinx, and, connecting it to feminism's engagement with psychoanalysis, argues that Mulvey and Wollen's film works-through long histories of patriarchal viewing practices and creates conditions in which the full range of women's voices can be listened to, heard and valued. Lamm explores how Riddles, the second collaboration between Mulvey and Wollen, drew inspiration from Wollen's influential work on 'counter-cinema' and Mulvey's foundational writing on 'the male gaze'.

Nicholas Ray's 1955 film Rebel Without a Cause is a globally recognised landmark of post-war American cinema. The film follows twenty-four hours in the life of troubled teen Jim Stark (James Dean), the new boy in town, who becomes drawn into a maelstrom of shifting social allegiances, emotional turmoil, and violence. Rebel tackled head-on the thorny political issue of juvenile delinquency from the perspective of the adolescents, contributed to the genesis of the teen movie, and was pivotal in bringing The Method acting style to wider audiences. Dean's nuanced and dextrous performance as the film's lead character was paramount in establishing the actor's iconicity. In his study of the film, Glyn Davis foregrounds the concept of rebellion, exploring in detail what it meant to be a rebel in the 1950s, the role that cinema has played in articulating rebellion and providing a haven for rebels, and why James Dean's archetypal depiction of a teenage rebel has endured. Combining sharp close analysis with perceptive contextualisation, Davis scrutinises Nicholas Ray's status as a maverick director, the challenges that The Method presented to calcified standards of performance in Hollywood, and the ways in which Rebel contributed to the shaping of new articulations of masculinity and sexuality. Ray's film, Davis ultimately argues, has an ambiguous stance on rebellion, depicting both the lure and the terror of rejecting conformity. Davis examines the significant contributions to Rebel Without a Cause made by an array of cast and crew members: from screenwriter Stewart Stern to composer Leonard Rosenman, from production designer Malcolm Bert to costume designer Moss Mabry, from lead actors such as Dean and Mineo to secondary players such as Marietta Canty and Edward Platt. Highlighting the film's shifting critical reception, he unpacks its legacy and the reasons that it continues to resonate with contemporary audiences.
