Selected Topics In Quantum Field Theory

This book investigates and describes the spectroscopies and optical properties of semiconductor bulk material, as well as their micro- and nanostructures. Such structures include quantum wells, superlattices, quantum wires and quantum dots. Traditional optical studies have focused on macroscopic optical constants and quantum mechanical theory, but our work investigates and details further the electrical states and their optical transitions, reflective and absorption spectra, luminescence and radiative recombination, photothermal ionization, magneto-optical effects, cyclotron resonance, and Raman scattering in these advanced semiconductor systems.While highlighting key contributions by the international scientific community in the field, this book emphasises on the new developments and results from the past 30 to 40 years -- primarily our own work. Of special interest are the exciton-polaritons in ZnO quantum wires, high-density polaritons in micro-cavities, and resulting phenomena such as room-temperature Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC)-like states, phonon-polaritons, quantum chaos in impurity electrons, and quantum effects in single quantum dots.These represent some of the most fascinating and significant phenomena in solid-state physics today, continuing to drive active research and new discoveries well into the future. We believe that this book will serve as a meaningful textbook for graduate students, and reference book for academic researchers and industry professionals engaged in semiconductor and optical physics.

Primarily intended for physics graduate students, the book is accessible to advanced undergraduates and will appeal to students with a background in statistics and a keen interest in quantum physics. By the end of this book, readers will be well-prepared for working on research projects that require the drawing of inference from the noisy data collected in quantum experiments, as epitomized by quantum state estimation.The book begins with chapters on the basics of estimation theory and the basics of quantum theory. This includes, in particular, the roles played by the frequentist methods of statistics, which are crucial when planning an experiment, and the Bayesian methods, which are the tools for drawing inference from the actual data gathered. A central concept is that of optimal error regions that supplement the point estimators ('best guesses') with the analogs of error bars in the high-dimensional parameter space; there is, in particular, the plausible region which comprises all point estimators supported by the data.Practical applications require the evaluation of high-dimensional integrals with the aid of Monte Carlo integration. For that, one needs to draw samples of quantum states from the relevant distributions, namely the priors and posteriors of Bayesian methodology. The book discusses the algorithms well-suited for this kind of sampling, which is central to the processing of real-life data.The book illustrates all concepts with pertinent examples and offers numerous exerciseswhich the readers can practice and perfect their skills with. The presentation is detailed and does not skip technical steps, which makes the book particularly valuable for self-studying readers and as textbook adopted by lecturers teaching courses on this or related topics. While the book is based on lecture notes developed for the author's courses on quantum state estimation at NUS and BIT, this book also offers a comprehensive account of the concepts and methods developed in the author's group at CQT and presents this material in textbook form for the first time.

In the Standard Model theory for the interactions of the elementary particles of nature, the transition between matter and antimatter is the combined application of the charge conjugation operator C, which changes particles to antiparticles and vice versa, and the parity operator P, which exchanges right to left and left to right. In spite of the theory's remarkable success at describing the result of virtually all particle-physics-related measurements, its high degree of CP symmetry makes it unable to explain the huge difference between matter and antimatter that is quite obvious in the matter-dominated universe that we live in, where antimatter only appears as faint transitory traces in radioactive decays and in the debris of cosmic ray interactions.This glaring deficiency of the Standard Model for describing the present-day universe is one of the strongest pieces of evidence that the theory is not complete and that some kind of new, as yet unrealized, additional forces that include alternative CP-violating mechanisms must exist.
