Offers unique insights into the justice system, its power and the abuses that can happen to marginalised people when they intersect with the justice system. This book explores how minority language users experience access to justice and the right to a fair trial when they use their language in the criminal justice system. It investigates the lived experiences of Irish speakers and deaf Irish Sign Language users who have directly interacted with the criminal justice system. Treating identity as both internally constructed and externally imposed, it focuses on the issues raised when internally constructed identities are misunderstood, oversimplified and misused by the majority or the authority. The two case studies presented here investigate three layers of access to justice: procedural access, substantive access and symbolic access. This lens reveals the areas where, in spite of legal protections to safeguard fairness, minority language users still experience unequal treatment. The book provides a nuanced understanding of the experiences of minority language users and will be of interest to researchers in translation and interpreting, sociolinguistics and human rights law.

Capitalism attempts to sustain itself in ever more barbaric ways. Since the 1980s, one way has been to incarcerate whole sections of society. This empire of punishment, which formed a central pillar of neoliberal propaganda, has performed a covert role in the entrenchment of an economic system designed to extract wealth, liberty and life from the people who live within it.

In this new, materialist understanding of mass incarceration, prison abolitionist Emmy R¿kete theorises how we got here. As capitalism floundered in the 1980s, it increased its economic exploitation, which in turn made it harder for workers to live well and continue to be productive members of society. The imprisonment of many of these people that swiftly followed was a calculated, yet dysfunctional response by the very system that created the problem.

Richard Schickel's study of Billy Wilder's 1944 noir classic Double Indemnity traces in fascinating detail the genesis and realisation of the film: its literary origins in James M. Cain's hard-boiled crime novel, the difficult relations between Wilder and his scriptwriter Raymond Chandler, the casting of a reluctant Fred MacMurray, and the late decision to cut the expensively filmed execution sequence from the final release. Schickel places Double Indemnity in the context of early 1940s Hollywood and the emergence of a new kind of crime thriller that later became known as film noir.
