This book applies spatial theories from human and cultural geography to the archaeological remains of Ancient Corinth in order to consider how sacred places could have been created in the first century.&nbsp; Building on Philip Sheldrake's theory, among others, the book defines sacred place as a space with significance.&nbsp; Significance is found in the group’s spiritual history, their identity, and the proper behaviours required to keep the group remaining a group.&nbsp; The book further argues that if any of these elements of place are not recognized nor upheld, the group risks becoming placeless.Dr. Alisha N. Paddock graduated from Manhattan Christian College (MCC) with a B.A. in Cross-Cultural Ministry in 2002.&nbsp; She went on to receive her Master of Divinity with New Testament Concentration from Emmanuel Christian Seminary at Milligan University in 2007. While teaching New Testament and Greek courses at MCC, she pursued her Ph.D. in Religious Studies from the University of Birmingham (UK).&nbsp;

Creating Sacred Places in First Century Corinth

In this book, Peter Anthony Mena looks closely at descriptions of space in ancient Christian hagiographies and considers how the desert relates to constructions of subjectivity. By reading three pivotal ancient hagiographies—the Life of Antony, the Life of Paul the Hermit, and the Life of Mary of Egypt—in conjunction with Gloria Anzaldúa’s ideas about the US/Mexican borderlands/la frontera, Mena shows readers how descriptions of the desert in these texts are replete with spaces and inhabitants that render the desert a borderland or frontier space in Anzaldúan terms. As a borderland space, the desert functions as a device for the creation of an emerging identity in late antiquity—the desert ascetic. Simultaneously, the space of the desert is created through the image of the saint. Literary critical, religious studies, and historical methodologies converge in this work in order to illuminate a heuristic tool for interpreting the desertin late antiquity and its importance for the development of desert asceticism. Anzaldúa’s theories help guide a reading especially attuned to the important relationship between space and subjectivity.

The book seeks to move forward debates on postsecularity as conceived by Habermas et.al. which recognise that, contrary to secular expectations, religion persists. The study is unique in exploring the irruptions (external breakthroughs) that unsettle secularisation and which give rise to postsecularisation. This shift has rendered sociology vulnerable to some unexpected theological considerations, some of which are explored in the study. Topics considered in the study, which make it accessible, include: dilemmas of naming; emotions and the visual; martyrdom and theodicy. Each of these has irruptive properties that force sociology to reconsider its theological debts. Postsecularity has become a fashionable term, but one which needs to be fleshed out and this study grasps a moment of opportunity to do so, which renders it original.

Pursuing a new global approach, this unique book provides an updated review of the geology of Iberia and its continental margins from a geodynamic perspective. Owing to its location close to successive plate margins, Iberia has played a pivotal role in the geodynamic evolution of the Gondwanan, Rheic, Pangea, Tethys s.l. and Eurasian plates over the last 600 Ma of Earth’s history. The geological record begins with the amalgamation of Gondwana in the Neoproterozoic, followed by the rifting and spread of the Rheic ocean; its demise, which led to the amalgamation of Pangea in the late Paleozoic; the rifting and spread of several arms of the Neotethys ocean in the Mesozoic Era; and concludes with their ongoing closure, which was responsible for the Alpine orogeny. The significant advances made in the past 20 years have attracted considerable international research interest in the geology of the Iberian Peninsula.&nbsp;This volume is the only one of the whole series of books composing the Geology of Iberian separated in two parts: Introduction to the Geology of Iberian and the Cadomian Cycle. The first part presents a general introduction to the Geology of Iberian, presented in five different volumes. The second part focuses in the Cadomian orogenic cycle and the oldest geological records in the Iberian Peninsula.
