When it was originally published in 1963, this was the first full study in English of French economic planning in the 20th century and appeared at a time when the UK was beginning a similar experiment. The book is an extensive source of information on the 20th century structure of the French economy, economic and governmental institutions and post-war French economic history that until this publication, was not conveniently available to English readers. The book will appeal to economic historians, and anyone concerned with French banking, taxation, government and agriculture. The book discusses the relations between the various public departments, in particular the Ministry of Finance, local government, the political parties, the consultative bodies, Parliament and the Plans as well as the attitudes of the trade unions, of French business and farmers.

America's Neglected Protectionist Tradition offers the most comprehensive treatment of the American protectionist school of economic thought - an intellectual tradition which originated with the ideas of Alexander Hamilton and Tench Coxe, and was developed further by thinkers such as Friedrich List, John Rae, and Henry Charles Carey. This work provides the first systematic account of the philosophy and theory of the American protectionist tradition by drawing upon the full corpus of their literature, which includes the writings of nearly seventy statesmen and economists. 
In reconstructing their system of theory, America's Neglected Protectionist Tradition demonstrates that the American protectionists represented a coherent and systematic school of economic thought, and one that rivalled their English classical counterparts. Against the conventional literature on the topic, which treats American Protectionist thought as merely an adaption of English classical economics, this work demonstrates that the American Protectionists developed a distinctive approach to economics. Not only did they differ from the Classicals on the policy recommendations concerning international trade, they rejected basic assumptions of the English classicals which remain foundational to contemporary economic analysis. Central to the thinking of the American protectionist tradition is the idea of the economy as dynamic and inventive. Rather than seeing scarce resources as placing fixed limits on economic progress, the American protectionists looked to invention, human ingenuity, and the diversity of talents and aptitudes as the means of forging the wealth of nations. Among other areas of economic analysis, this work explores the American protectionists' support for economic diversification, which stands in contrast with free trade theory's emphasis on specialisation. By challenging the Classical view that individuals represent homogeneous and uniform factors of production, the protectionists saw mankind as possessing unique talents, aptitudes and dispositions. Protected diversification was thus necessary to allow individuals to exercise these unique qualities. By recovering this neglected tradition, this work not only fills a significant gap in the history of economic thought but also provides valuable historical perspective on contemporary debates regarding trade and industrial policy, technological innovation and economic development.

Das auf mehrere Bande angelegte Werk prasentiert nahezu das gesamte deutsche Verfassungsrecht des Zeitraumes zwischen 1806 und 1918. Hiermit wird der sich gleichsam schrittweise vollziehende Ubergang von einem traditionell standischen oder gar furstlich-absolutistischen zu einem zumeist monarchisch-konstitutionellen System aufgearbeitet, dessen jaher Untergang schlielich in die nationalstaatlich-republikanisch gepragte demokratisch-parlamentarische Staatsform Weimars mundet. Mit dem Gesamtwerk steht dem Fachpublikum eine leicht zugangliche, bislang nicht gekannte Fulle von Dokumenten zur Verfugung, die fur die verfassungsrechtliche Entwicklung Deutschlands und seiner einzelnen Staaten von zentraler Bedeutung waren. Dabei wird groer Wert auf die authentische, d. h. buchstaben- und zeichengetreue Ubernahme der Texte gelegt. Dem jeweiligen Dokumententeil sind in jedem Band "Historische Einfuhrungen" vorangestellt. In diesem Rahmen werden an den einschlagigen Dokumenten orientierte (verfassungs-) rechtliche, zeitlich wie territorial ubergreifende entwicklungsgeschichtliche Darstellungen vorgenommen. In dem hier vorliegenden 3. Band werden erstmals uber 450 Verfassungsdokumente prasentiert, welche fur die verfassungsstaatliche Entwicklung des Groherzogtums Berg und des Herzogtums Braunschweig pragend waren. From a leading historian, the story of how entrepreneurial Jewish immigrants transformed commercial banking and enabled the economic and social advancement of Jews in America. What are immigrants to do when business opportunities abound in their new home, but banks refuse essential financial support? How could they make the journey in the first place without helping hands? In this lively history, Rebecca Kobrin chronicles the turn-of-the-twentieth-century Jewish immigrants who stepped up by doing the lending themselves. Arriving from the Russian Empire and settling primarily in New York, they made livelihoods by assisting fellow Jews so they could purchase passage to the United States and, after arriving, obtain credit that other lenders would not dare provide. Credit to the Nation traces the novel practices of bankers who not only enabled the flourishing of American Jewry but also revolutionized the US financial industry. Drawing on previously unexamined archival materials in Russian, Yiddish, German, and English, Kobrin tells a story that is also crucial to the history of New York, as immigrant bankers' financing of real estate transformed wide swathes of the city. Lenders drove a boom in the prices of tenement buildings, but heavy speculation eventually precipitated the downfall of immigrant banking. Kobrin notes in particular the case of the Bank of United States--a private lender catering primarily to Jewish businessmen--which the Federal Reserve refused to bail out from bankruptcy in 1930. Immigrants' grasping for credit, and the rise and fall of immigrant banks, gave way to a contemporary banking industry that, ironically, refuses credit to today's immigrants. Kobrin reminds us that now, as before, the denial of credit pushes entrepreneurial Americans into unregulated money-lending and the trap of endless debt.

Economists dream of equilibrium. It's time to wake up. In mainstream economics, markets are ideal if competition is perfect. When supply balances demand, economic maturity is orderly and disturbed only by shocks. These ideas are rooted in doctrines going back thousands of years, yet, as James K. Galbraith and Jing Chen show, they contradict the foundations of our scientific understanding of the physical and biological worlds. First published in 1983, French Planning in Theory and Practice (now with a new preface by the authors) provides the first detailed account since the late 1960's of the French system of economic planning, and its relevance for other market economies. It offers an original and non-technical rationale for planning in a market system and examines the decline in French planning, at a time when the new government was attempting to extend the traditional planning system.The initial theoretical part of the book is primarily addressed to economists. It reviews the literature on indicative planning and argues that it is severely deficient, above all in failing to take account of the implications of uncertainty on private decision-making. These problems have empirical relevance for the French experience, and lead to the proposal for a different form of planning, supplying co-ordination that would not be spontaneously forthcoming in the public or private sectors. The analysis goes beyond the scope of French planning and has policy relevance for all market economies.Although written with the main analytic issues in mind, the remainder of the book stands independently as a comprehensive study of planning in France. It traces the gradual loosening of the links between policy making and planning in France and tries to draw the lessons from this experience for the practice of planning. The authors conclude that the type of planning that had seemed so successful in the 1960's was simply no longer possible in the economic and political climate of the 1970's, yet no real attempt was made to define an alternative role for the plan. The political and administrative authorities were happy to see planning fade. The arrival of the Socialist government offered great scope for the revival of the process, but the authors caution against supposing that political will was the only vital ingredient. The book is based on extensive interviews with planners, analysts, and decision-makers as well as on published and unpublished written and statistical sources.
