Plant Enzyme Systems and Their Biochemical and Environmental Interactions

Routledge Studies in Health in Africa

Over the past 30 years, an ever-expanding community of global health actors have been intervening in the poorest parts of the world with the aim of combatting disease and improving health outcomes. While many global health programmes in the Global South have been successful in saving lives, their successes have often been compromised by poor coordination, inefficiency and a lack of alignment with national priorities.This book outlines the deep historical and political dimensions of this fragmentation, using rural Zambia as a case study. In the name of global health, different actors produce and circulate radically different stories about how to improve health. These narratives not only contribute to a fragmented landscape of health provision but also create more subtle and pervasive forms of fragmentation in the everyday lives of health workers, patients and government officials. Based on long-term ethnographic fieldwork in rural Zambia, this book examines three different global health interventions driven by differing stories of salvation, community and experimentation. Tracing the longer history of these stories, the book shows how they have failed to account for the realities of life in rural Zambia.Providing an innovative and nuanced analysis of global health that challenges the idea of fragmentation as simply a technical problem, this book will be an important read for researchers of global health and African studies.

For two centuries, multinational enterprises (MNEs) have arrived in waves on Australia's shores. Highly visible and influential household names among them -Ford, IBM, Kodak, Electrolux, ANZ - but also many smaller, lesser-known enterprises. Foreign MNEs in Australia today account for almost half of our top 2000 firms and control over A$1.4 trillion of assets. There is much we do not understand about these important institutions, why they chose to invest here, how they entered, and why some firms survived for long periods, but others exited.The history of MNEs, more than most topics, is inextricably connected to international experience. Across half a century of research, their history has emerged as a vibrant field of investigation in North America, Europe and, increasingly, Asia. MNE activity in Australia, briefly referenced in some of these studies, formed an important part of the global presence of many firms. This is the first history of foreign MNEs in twentieth-century Australia, filling a major gap in the economic and business history literature of Australia and of the history of international business globally. It integrates the important and distinctive Australian experience with an extensive international and comparative scholarship on big business and multinational enterprise.

New Frontiers in Regional Science: Asian Perspectives

This book focuses on a very important and still controversial topic in Japan, namely, whether a future exists for Japanese farmers, especially rice-producing farmers. Dealt with here is the prospect along with a personal view of the course that Japanese agriculture should follow, that is, a prescription for enriching the international competitiveness of the agricultural sector, especially rice production, in a more market-oriented economy. Toward restoration of Japanese agriculture, prescriptions are pursued from different aspects. One is the planting schedule of various farm products at the micro level such as the crop rotation system, derived from the mixed-integer dynamic programming model. Another is a macroeconomic policy to enhance the export of the restored 2 million tons of rice by the abolition of the policy of reducing rice acreage-a policy considered unreasonable by some. The path that agriculture in Japan should take has been argued by scholars and experts in related fields. However, no argument has been based on scientific and objective proof. Some applications of mixed-integer dynamic programming model are shown, which are very useful for policy makers as well as graduate students in the field of economic policy (esp. regional &amp; dynamics) and dynamic agricultural planning (esp. planting &amp; comprehensive management).

It does so by exploring the interaction between hard institutions such as carbon policies and regulation and soft institutions such as national culture.The book focuses on national culture as a key factor in corporate decarbonization practices, one traditionally overlooked by analytical frameworks rooted in economic development, laws and regulation. It argues that fighting climate change requires collaboration from organisations in countries with diverse cultures. Managers and various stakeholders who exert significant influence over climate actions are likely to respond to a climate threat in accordance with their cultural prescriptions towards risk, regulation, environmental stewardship and stakeholder engagement. Analysing a large, cross-country dataset covering firms from both developing and emerging companies, the book analyses firm-level decisions, behaviours, strategies and outcomes related to decarbonization. It finds that corporate decisions to decarbonize are influenced not just by formal institutions such as macrolevel regulations, climate standards and policies, but softer institutions such as national culture which either facilitate or constrain a firm's ability to adopt effective climate strategies.
