Kinship and Community: Selections from the Texas African American Photography Archive celebrates the rich history of photography made by and for Black communities in Texas. Kinship &amp; Community: Selections from the Texas African American Photography Archive presents a remarkable chapter in America's visual history. By documenting collective self-representation from the last decades of racial segregation--images of Black everyday life created by local Black photographers for Black communities across Texas--this collection celebrates a unique but overlooked regional culture while underscoring photography's enduring power as a social tool. Kinship &amp; Community rescues and elevates the work of more than a dozen photographers who helped produce this abundant visual culture, including A. B. Bell, Marion Butts, Hiram Dotson, Elnora Frazier, Curtis Humphrey, Alonzo Jordan, and Benny Joseph.These dedicated local photographers, typically operating as small businesses, recorded the activities and events of their communities: parades, award ceremonies, coronations, and other celebrations of everyday achievements. Many of them also contributed to national and regional publications, primarily Texas's numerous Black newspapers. While those contributions did include some coverage of civil-rights leaders and picket lines, their main emphasis was on the quotidian accomplishments of a vibrant and self-sufficient Black culture--accomplishments all the more remarkable for a wider context of entrenched racial and political oppression. As Nicole R. Fleetwood writes in her essay, "The TAAP collection demonstrates what happens when we shift our attention away from the exceptional moments of Black American life most often highlighted in the national media, slow down, and pay attention to the local and regional scenes where Black people build livelihoods, neighborhoods, and intergenerational networks of belonging."Copublished by Aperture and Documentary Arts.

Anatomy of The Ship

HJMS Fuso was designed in 1911, the first Japanese super-dreadnought within the "8 x 8" program. She was the first of four twin battleships with her sister ship, Yamashiro and the "improved Fuso-class" Ise and Hyuga. Commissioned in 1915, Fuso, with 30,600 tons trial displacement and twelve 356mm guns in her main armament, was the biggest and most powerful battleship in the world. In twenty-nine years of service, Fuso underwent two major reconstructions and modernizations. Her distinctive silhouette with the highest pagoda tower in the Imperial Navy, was visible in many operations of the Imperial Japanese Grand Fleet during the Pacific War. This book compares Fuso with Yamashiro showing the differences in the way that the two ships were designed and equipped. Both ships met their demise during the battle of Leyte Gulf when they went down in the Surigao Strait, targeted by torpedoes and gunfire from US battleships and cruisers. Janusz Skulski's anatomies of three renowned ships of the 20th century Japanese navy are among the most comprehensive of the Anatomy series with hundreds of meticulously researched drawings of the ships. This new edition is a genuine "Super Anatomy" containing the most detailed renditions of these ships ever seen.

Photographs are more than just illustrations of a moment in time, they offer a powerful way to interpret and understand the past like no other historical source can. U.S. History in 15 Photographs introduces this power through 15 iconic and lesser-known photographs representing key eras in American History. Taking the reader from Reconstruction and Westward Expansion, to the Roaring Twenties and the World Wars, right up to Modern American Culture, it offers a refreshing, visual account of American history. This volume reorients photography as a major source for understanding the past, expanding not only the stories that we tell, but the way we tell them. Teaching students how to understand, contextualize, and interpret historic photography, U.S. History in 15 Photographs centers diverse stories about the American experience by exploring topics around race, class, gender, disability, the environment, and social justice. The scholars who contributed to this volume show that photographs are more just illustrations from the past, but foundational sources with surprising revelations about the past.

1865 to the 21st century

US History in 15 Photographs

A beautifully arresting photographic record of North American coaling towers, which once fueled steam locomotives and powered the country. A fine art photography must-have for railroad enthusiasts and anyone interested in the industrial golden era. In 1906, America commenced a major railroad modernization project, driven by massive industrial era investment and development. A lasting symbol of this time in history remains today: the imposing coaling towers that pepper the country and which once held the coal that powered steam locomotives. Over the course of five years and 20,000 miles, photographer Jeff Brouws documented these towers. Silent Monoliths tells their story. The towers, built of concrete, a modern material with historical roots traceable to the Roman aqueducts, were constructed to replace aging (and less fire-retardant and less efficient) wooden coaling wharves and chutes. As the railroads transitioned from steam to diesel in the late 1940s and throughout the 1950s, most of these coaling towers slipped into obsolescence—some demolished, others “retired-in-place” and left standing. As a result of the latter, many examples of these sculptural, architectonic remnants of industrial brawn stand in silence across North America—from Flomaton, Alabama, to the northernmost reaches of Ontario, Canada; as far west as Glenns Ferry, Idaho, to the eastern seaboard in New Haven, Connecticut. Essays from industrial and railroad historian John Hankey and art historian Marcella Hackbardt illuminate the significance of these otherworldly relics. In the spirit of Hilla and Bernd Becher, Brouws’ photographic portfolio presents over 105 examples of these austere monoliths, conveying their unique place in cultural history.
