Pushing against the association of Islamic philosophy with a temporal and geographical 'elsewhere', this work makes the case for a Ricoeurian hermeneutics of appropriation that revitalises Avicenna's thinking for the philosophy of today. Selami Varlik develops a precise approach to the appropriation of Avicenna, exploring the tension between being and non-being inherent in the notion of creation as crucial both to Ricoeur's hermeneutics and to the duality between essence and existence in Avicenna. Although he pays careful attention to their theological differences, Varlik identifies paths of convergence between Avicenna and Ricoeur on the levels of both form and content. In relation to form, he identifies a common language based on a shared concern with putting belief in tension with rational discourse. With regard to content, he explores similarities and divergences between the two philosophers' approaches to the concept of creation. An aspect of this is the pivotal role played by Avicenna's conception of ex nihilo creation in medieval philosophy, which Varlik interprets as indirectly influencing the distinction between origin and temporal beginning in Ricoeur. This is a vital contribution to the development of a living Islamic philosophy that skilfully navigates the tensions between the experience of the text and its conceptual dimension on the one hand and between fidelity to a philosophical tradition and semantic innovation on the other.

T&T Clark New Studies in Bonhoeffer’s Theology and Ethics

In this sensitive work, Whyte examines issues and ambiguities within Bonhoeffer's writing-as well as complexities in his biography-that imply gaps in his understanding of the full theological implications of Christ's solidarity with suffering. Whyte explores how, whilst Bonhoeffer ardently opposed white supremacist oppression enacted by the National Socialists, he also evidenced persistent entanglement with white supremacist logics and primary longings. Bonhoeffer scholars who ignore, miss, or dismiss these entanglements display vulnerability to those same logics. This book engages with a wide range of thinkers, including: Reggie Williams, Lisa Dahill, Michael Mawson, Katie Cannon, Gustavo Gutiérrez, and Keri Day. It also considers the distinct responses to white supremacy offered in the early 20th Century by Adam Clayton Powell, Sr., Pastor of Abyssinian Baptist Church, and the leadership of the Azusa Street Revival as evidence that Bonhoeffer's view was not the only theological 'view from below'. Ultimately, Whyte offers a constructive theological ethical method for repentance away from white supremacy that builds on, critiques, and moves beyond Bonhoeffer. This method seeks to overcome the primary longings at the root of white supremacy to better resist the manifestations of white supremacist in our day. This work honors Bonhoeffer whilst seeking to go further along the paths of repentance he walked by addressing issues he did not consider.

What does it mean to speak of humans as the image of God when apophatic theology speaks of an infinite God who transcends naming, comprehension, and worldly appearance? Bringing Church Father, Gregory of Nyssa into dialogue with the phenomenologies of Michel Henry, Maurice Merleau-Ponty, and Jean-Louis Chretien, Thomas Breedlove answers this question and explores the importance of embodiment to the doctrine of imago Dei. Divided into three parts, this book investigates humans' relation to the divine through three successive approaches. The first, in conversation with Merleau-Ponty, analyses the existential and phenomenological aspects of fleshly finitude as the paradigmatic site of the creature's difference from God. The second takes up Henry's philosophy of life alongside Gregory's metaphysics of participation to offer an account of creaturely life in its likeness or identity to divine life. The third, though conversation with Chrétien, examines the christological aspects of Gregory's anthropology in order to find the dynamic synthesis of likeness and difference that determines the nature of human beings as, in some way, reflecting God. In blending 4th century theology with 20th century phenomenology, Breedlove not only showcases the alternative perspectives they can offer each other, but further presents a novel theological anthropology. He argues that imago Dei is not merely one aspect of human identity, but rather precisely what constitutes 'human creatureliness', as is revealed in the dynamism and groundlessness of the flesh.
