Das Museum Ludwig verfügt über eine herausragende ständige Sammlung. Diese darf sich einiger Superlative rühmen: Sie enthält den umfangreichsten Pop-Art-Bestand außerhalb der USA, die drittgrößte Picasso-Sammlung der Welt, bedeutende Werke des deutschen Expressionismus und der Neuen Sachlichkeit sowie rund 70.000 Fotografien, die die Geschichte des Mediums von seinen frühsten Anfängen bis heute abbilden. Damit besitzt das Museum Ludwig eine der international wichtigsten Sammlungen von Kunst des 20. und 21. Jahrhunderts. Diese wird in dieser Publikation anhand von 146 Werken dargestellt. Die Auswahl ist geleitet von dem Bestreben, die Sammlung durch bisher vernachlässigte Positionen aus dem nicht europäischen Kontext sowie durch Werke der noch immer unterrepräsentierten Künstlerinnen zu erweitern. Sie wirft aktuelle Schlaglichter auf die in stetigem Wachstum und Wandel begriffenen Museumsbestände.
