Jedes Frühjahr erwacht ein Mirabellenbaum im Warschauer Stadtteil Muranów aus seinem Winterschlaf, zieht Saft aus der Erde und bildet weiße Blüten aus. Diese verwandeln sich im Sommer zu kleinen gelben Kügelchen, den himmlisch süßen Mirabellen. Die Menschen aus den umliegenden Straßen sammeln sie und machen daraus köstlichen Kompott oder Kuchen. 
Die Mirabelle kennt sie alle: Sie wohnen im Mietshaus des Herrn Friedman oder arbeiten in der Fabrik für Karnevalskostüme der Gebrüder Alfus. Mit den Kindern kann sich die Mirabelle sogar unterhalten, und von den anderen Bäumen erfährt sie, was sonst so in der Stadt passiert. 
Aber die Zeiten ändern sich, es kommen Besatzer, und das Leben rund um den Mirabellenbaum wird von Mauern umschlossen.
Cezary Harasimowiczs Jugendroman ist die Saga einer Familie von Mirabellenbäumen, die seit den 1920er Jahren im Warschauer Stadtteil Muranów wachsen. Wir erfahren etwas über den Wohlstand seiner jüdischen Einwohner in den 1920er und 1930er Jahren, die Zerstörung im Zweiten Weltkrieg, den Holocaust, das Leben im sozialistischen Polen. Als Zeitzeuginnen erzählen die Mirabellen auf märchenhaft poetische Weise die Geschichte im Kleinen wie im Großen, auch weil sich die eine nicht ohne die andere verstehen lässt.
