It argues that understanding popular culture is key to understanding how Hong Kong identity has evolved, and it discusses the various phases that popular culture has gone through in the post-war period. In many European states, multiculturalism has recently come under attack, being openly questioned by many in both the public and political spaces as being in 'crisis'. Prompting many of these attacks have been incidents or events - typically interpreted as 'controversies' - that have involved or centred on issues relating to Muslims or Islam. Having ramifications in the social, cultural or political spaces, many have seen these controversies as accentuating the 'problem' of Muslims and Islam. Focusing on a number of these 'crises' and 'controversies', this book seeks to to interrogate the theories of Islamophobia through the lens of a series of different 'crises and controversies' that have involved - or have been perceived as involving - Muslims or Islam. This book critically engages these 'crises and controversies' through the framework of the definitions, theories and concepts explored in the author's earlier book Islamophobia? (Ashgate, 2010). Allen's latest boo sets out to: better understand where, how and why the responses of both the right, left and centre of the European political spectrum are seemingly converging in views and attitudes towards Muslims and Islam; contribute additional knowledge to the still relatively under-researched yet extremely timely phenomenon of Islamophobia and anti-Muslim hatred; and consider how this links to and affects attitudes and expressions manifested in the public and social spaces. Employing a largely thematic approach, this book focuses on the linked impacts of a range of different controversies that have occurred at the local, national and regional levels. In the last decade there has been an explosion of interest in the relationship between migration and development. In particular, there has been much excitement about the potential for migration to make a positive contribution to development and concern about ensuring that development reduces the need for people to migrate. The ensuing 'buzz' has created much discussion but it is often surrounded by conceptual confusion and simplistic analyses. This volume will introduce the reader to the debates about migration and development and provide a critical overview drawing on insights from case studies of particularly migration practices, development interventions and policy initiatives from different regions of the world. The text begins by situating the recent burst of interest in broader historical currents of development discourse, examining some of the intellectual and political factors that have brought it to the surface now. It introduces the main elements of migration theory as it has been applied in the developing regions of the world, before presenting the theories proposing causal relationships between migration and development. The book will then explore these interactions in more detail by focusing on some of the key concepts that underpin much of the discussion, in particular remittances, diasporas and human capital. A central argument of the book will be that migration must be seen as intimately related to development and change rather than as a symptom of development failure. An exception is perhaps provided with the movement of refugees and other forced migrants and a chapter will examine the extent to which it is helpful to distinguish forced and voluntary migration in relation to development. The final section will critically review how the migration and development discourse has been adopted by policy makers in a range of initiatives. The book will conclude by reflecting on how the development and migration debate remains incoherent and contradictory in many respects. It will argue that migration brings a challenge to sedentary notion of development that has yet to be taken seriously by development scholars. Each chapter will include case studies from different parts of the world to illustrate the points being made. In contrast to much of the current literature on migration and development, each chapter will consider both internal and international migration

There are very few sociology textbooks that attempt to provide a general introduction for students to modern Asia. Within the framework of the comparative sociology of Asian societies, this volume explores key issues in culture and social structure. In cultural terms, it considers religion, nationalism and popular culture. With regard to social structure, there is an emphasis on gender, the family, social class and ethnicity. This comparative study also examines major aspects of social change relating to contemporary globalization.
