This book brings together scholars from ethics and philosophy of science in order to identify ways in which insights gleaned from one subfield can shed light on the other. The book focuses on two radical Anti-Theory movements that emerged in the 1970's and 1980's, one in philosophy of science and the other in ethics. Both movements challenged attempts to supply general, systematized philosophical theories within their domains and thus invited the reconsideration of what philosophical theorizing can and should offer. Each of these movements was domain-specific - that is, each criticized the aspirations to philosophical theories within its own domain and advanced arguments aimed at philosophers within their own specific subfield. The innovative systematic comparative examination of these movements by scholars from each domain sheds new light on some familiar debates, offers new and exciting paths of research to pursue in each domain, provides insight into the place of science and ethics in contemporary life and culture, and enables a fresh view on the longstanding and alluring philosophical aspiration for a fully general, absolute theory of reality and an ultimate objective foundational theory of knowledge.

This book examines the complicated place of animals in literary analysis and education and shows how an ethically engaged approach to animals’ representation could be pursued to challenge anthropocentrism and cultivate multispecies empathy. Other species are represented in the literary education canon, including farmed animals. Yet the animals are typically anthropomorphized to guide students toward humanist readings and away from consideration of animals’ experiences or subjectivities. This reproduces the idea that animals are mere objects meant to be exploited for human purposes, even metaphorical and educational ones. John Drew develops the term “anthropo-allegory” to capture and critique the process through which students are taught to read animal literary representations exclusively as symbolic analogues for humans and human themes. The concept serves as an analytical lens for critically interrogating significant texts taught across educational levels and exposing the deeply engrained educational anthropocentrism that silences animal issues, even when animals are represented. Crucially, Drew identifies texts and pedagogical strategies that can help cultivate a literary educational animal ethic that simultaneously encourages analytical rigour and multispecies concern.

Vulneranz (menschliche Gewaltsamkeit) nimmt im persönlichen und politischen, sozialen und kulturellen, und nicht zuletzt im religiösen Leben spürbar zu. Dabei werden die paradoxen Machtwirkungen unterschätzt, die zwischen Vulnerabilität, Vulneranz und Resilienz am Werk sind. Das Verletzlichkeitsparadox besagt, dass ausgerechnet Schutz- und Sicherungsstrategien die Vulnerabilität erhöhen und Resilienz schwächen können. Umgekehrt zeigt sich im Verschwendungsparadox, wie das Erhöhen von Vulnerabilität zum Resilienzprozess wird und damit drohender Vulneranz widersteht.

Die transdisziplinäre Forschungsstudie schlägt eine längst fällige, gesellschaftlich höchst relevante Brücke von der Vulnerabilitäts- zur Resilienzforschung.

Prof. Dr. Hildegund Keul, Theologin, Religionswissenschaftlerin und Germanistin, ist seit 2010 in der theologischen und interdisziplinären Vulnerabilitätsforschung tätig. Seit 2018 leitet sie an der Julius-Maximilians-Universität Würzburg das DFG-geförderte Forschungsprojekt "Verwundbarkeiten".

This book examines discriminations against horses in the literature and culture of the long eighteenth century alongside changing animal welfare and anticruelty activism. In doing so, it challenges period conceptions of what horses should look and behave like alongside systemic prejudice and normalized violence towards those who did not conform. In two parts, this open access work offers a broad and often unconventional approach to animal ethics, written by a pioneer in animal welfare science and ethics. The author Clive Phillips, Australia's first professor of animal welfare, first describes his life experience and career in the field, which enabled him to provide thoughts and possible solutions to some of the key problems in human-animal relations following in section two. &nbsp;His memoirs describe a journey from privileged upbringing in the Christian tradition to confronting Australian livestock industries with some of their traditional practices. Experiences meeting livestock farmers, industry supporters and national representative bodies taught him new approaches to the ways in which we manage animals. After building one of the largest animal welfare centers worldwide, Clive Phillips retired and pursues his animal welfare mission independently. &nbsp;The second part introduces novel aspects that evolved with the author over several decades of involvement in animal welfare science. This part takes a wide perspective, asking how important and unique our animal kingdom is, how did it evolve and why, and what are the key issues for our treatment of other animals? It concludes by considering our future relationship with animals and how this will change with current developments in society and in particular contemporary attitudes toward the consumption of animals. &nbsp;This historical and futuristic look at animal ethics is unique, making this book a thought provoking read for all interested. This open access book explores the role of imagination in animal ethics and its constitutive links to empathy/sympathy and anthropomorphism. The book argues for the constitutive role of imagination in ethical deliberation, but acknowledges that there exist important limits to its use. However, “limit” is here understood not merely negatively as restriction and insufficiency, but rather positively as “condition of possibility,” so what the book explores and analyses are the conditions for a positive and fruitful use of the imagination in ethics. The book uses as a “frame” the questions and issues raised in J.M. Coetzee’s The Lives of Animals to explore some central and salient themes.
