Lived Experiences of School Matrons

Free SHS Policy Implementation in Sekyere-East District, Ghana

This book explored the impact of Ghana's free Senior High School (SHS) policy on the feeding dynamics from the perspective of SHS matrons in the Sekyere East District. Utilizing a qualitative phenomenological approach, the research revealed that the policy has significantly increased matrons' workloads, adversely affecting their health. The study found that matrons are excluded from budgeting processes, leading to menu planning based on available rather than planned resources. Challenges such as food shortages, sanitation issues, and inadequate salaries were highlighted. Recommendations include a reassessment of matrons' salaries by the Fair Wages and Salary Commission, support from stakeholders like Parents Associations and NGOs in providing non-perishable goods, and the formation of a national committee with substantial matron representation for menu and budget preparation.
