This book, first published in 1984, examines the lifetime of Georges Cuvier, and in his constant and varying struggles to retain his position both as a politician and as a leading naturalist we find displayed almost all of the political tensions of Restoration France. Our understanding of the new French intellectual elite is enhanced if we can explain what sort of power this group wielded, and how it related to the structure of politics as a whole. Cuvier's career epitomises this relationship to the highest degree. Examination of the building of his career under the Directory and Empire offers many new insights into the way the expanding market for science, the restructuring of society as a whole, and the moral authority of science itself could be utilised as resources in the making of a reputation. The influence of scientific competition and controversy on Cuvier's scientific work is examined at length, and it is argued that they exerted a decisive effect on the structure of his biological and geological thinking.

This book, first published in 1983, is a valuable corrective to the lack of academic research on the events of 1830 - a year of revolutions across the continent of Europe. Social protests and political changes are examined to note the causes of the political turmoil and revolution in 1830, and then the results of the revolutions' developments are analysed, as general European social, political and diplomatic crises as well as a series of individual outbreaks. The book also turns to comparative study to look at the hows and wherefores of the revolutions, as the dynamics, participants and effects of revolution are examined in turn.

This book, first published in 1974, analyses the problems and mechanics of the Revolutionary movement in the army during and after the French Revolution. It charts the transition of the French army from the Revolutionary force of 1815 to the counter-revolutionary army which in June 1848 led the suppression of the European Revolutionary movement. By defining the scope of political of political unrest in the army between 1815 and 1848 - its causes, patterns and remedies - the author demonstrates that republican political ideology had only a limited appeal for the military and served more as a rallying point for discontent with the conditions of service.

It focuses on the career of Hafizullah Amin, considered in the West as a near-genocidal mass murderer, intent on establishing a personal fiefdom in Afghanistan. However, this book argues that he was a man struggling against impossible odds to preserve his country's independence and at the same time drag it into the twentieth century. He commanded such loyalty and support within the Afghanistan Communist Party and the armed forces that the Russians had to invade to get rid of him.

Iran and Saudi Arabia are rivals in the Persian Gulf and the Islamic world but there have been significant changes in their relationship over time with the two countries often caught between conflict and accommodation. What long term patterns in Iran's policies towards Saudi Arabia can be identified to explain these shifts and what factors have shaped Tehran's policies? Western observers have long been torn on this issue viewing Iran's foreign policy as at times completely ideological, completely rational, or completely unpredictable. In this book James Devine argues that since 1987 the foreign policy of the Islamic Republic has been predominantly realist in nature, designed to ensure the security of the state rather than achieve ideological goals but that ideology has played an important part in determining who Iran views as enemies or friends. The amount of influence ideology and realism have played on Tehran's foreign policy has varied depending on the level of regime consolidation and the intensity of factional competition, and so the interaction between realpolitik and ideology are carefully explored to identify long term patterns in Iran's policies toward Saudi Arabia and clarify how they were formed.

This book examines two main themes which had national significance in eighteenth-century British Methodism. First, the interaction between the two distinct theological expressions of Methodism; Calvinist and Arminian. The 'parting of the ways' marks the first major split in Methodism as the differences of theological understanding changed into the demarcation of religious organisations. The core of the book will feature a series of case-studies which explore Calvinist and Arminian Methodists in a number of key locations, where competition and even religious take-over bids were used by John Wesley's movement to gain religious dominance. Secondly, the book explores the nature of John Wesley's leadership of his movement, and especially how the competition between the Calvinist and Arminian strands of Methodism made it necessary for Wesley to change the way he exercised his leadership and authority. This will be examined through Wesley's role as connexional leader and his relationships with individual preachers and society members. Hart also explores both the reasons his leadership changed over the period of the study and the impact these changes had in the local context. The book will explore how these changes were made necessary by the increasing size of his 'Connexion' and the attendant changes in the application of Wesleyan discipline especially on the itinerant preachers. Whilst much has been written about Wesleyanism, and more specifically about John Wesley as a religious leader, and there is now an increase of interest in George Whitefield and the Calvinist branch of Methodism.
