This book examines two main themes which had national significance in eighteenth-century British Methodism. First, the interaction between the two distinct theological expressions of Methodism; Calvinist and Arminian. The 'parting of the ways' marks the first major split in Methodism as the differences of theological understanding changed into the demarcation of religious organisations. The core of the book will feature a series of case-studies which explore Calvinist and Arminian Methodists in a number of key locations, where competition and even religious take-over bids were used by John Wesley's movement to gain religious dominance. Secondly, the book explores the nature of John Wesley's leadership of his movement, and especially how the competition between the Calvinist and Arminian strands of Methodism made it necessary for Wesley to change the way he exercised his leadership and authority. This will be examined through Wesley's role as connexional leader and his relationships with individual preachers and society members. Hart also explores both the reasons his leadership changed over the period of the study and the impact these changes had in the local context. The book will explore how these changes were made necessary by the increasing size of his 'Connexion' and the attendant changes in the application of Wesleyan discipline especially on the itinerant preachers. Whilst much has been written about Wesleyanism, and more specifically about John Wesley as a religious leader, and there is now an increase of interest in George Whitefield and the Calvinist branch of Methodism. This book is unique in examining how the two affected each other at the local level. The book shows that, however united were the leaders of early Methodism even in their theological diversity, in promoting evangelical revival their unity was not strong enough to hold together the religious movements they founded.

This book examines the spiritual experiences of the first British Methodist lay people and the language used to describe those experiences. It reflects on physical manifestations such as shouting, weeping, groaning, visions, and out-of-body experiences and their role in the process of spiritual development. These experiences offer an intimate perspective on the surprisingly holistic origins of the evangelical revival. The study features autobiographical narratives and other first-hand manuscripts in which "ordinary" lay people recount their first impressions of Methodism, their conflicted feelings throughout the conversion process, their approach toward death and dying, and their mixed attitudes toward the task of writing itself. The book will be relevant to scholars of Methodism, evangelicalism and religious history as well as those interested in emotions and religious experience.

Negative Theology and Christology: Ascension and Eucharist makes a critical and constructive contribution to systematic theology by exploring the meaningful interpretation of the doctrine of the ascension of Christ. Through an insightful reading of Christ's ascension to heaven as the concealment of the revealer?, the author investigates the extent to which negative theology illumines some of the deepest doctrinal structures of Christian faith. On the basis of close attention to tradition, both catholic and reformed, Norman provides a revisionist history of the doctrine of the ascension that challenges other recent accounts, and offers a corrective to simplistic and reductive interpretations of the place of heaven in Christian worldviews, ancient, medieval, and modern. Norman outlines the significance of the concealment of Christ to Christian life and thought, recovering the ascension as one of the most important mysteries of the faith. In his chapter entitled 'Anselm on Ethics' in the Cambridge Companion to Anselm, Jeffrey Brower comments that, 'Anselm's ethical views have received very little attention from contemporary scholars, and as a result there is no satisfactory systematic treatment of them available in the contemporary literature.' This book seeks to fill that lacuna. More specifically the purpose of this volume is to examine the extent to which Anselm of Canterbury possessed a consistent normative philosophy which coherently addressed the question of how the individual ought to act. By so doing it extends the contemporary commentary of Anselm's ethical philosophy beyond the abstract and meta-ethical and analyses the ways in which Anselm's letter collection can be used to show pragmatic approaches to ethical questions. In examining this field, this book contains two interdependent parts, one illustrative of the other. The first deals with Anselm's anthropology, theory of will, and ethical philosophy. The second examines the impact of his theology and ethical philosophy upon his societal and political beliefs. The contrast between formal theological writing and the more personal letter collections is intentional as a way of evaluating the manner in which Anselm's thought is consistent across a range of academic exercises and real world scenarios. In addition, this provides case studies of how a normative approach opens up new lines of research and furthers the field of Anselm studies, addressing several past issues of contention.
