First published in 1985, Investigating Rape examines practices related with rape in four United States police departments and suggests what lessons the British police service might draw from them. The author urges greater recognition of the emotional trauma suffered by rape victims and the effects of that trauma on the relationship between victims and investigators. He recommends changes in police procedure, including new approaches in interviewing style and changes in training and in liaison with agencies who provide help to victims. More than four hundred years have passed since the concept of charity was first given statutory legal form in England in the Statute of Charitable Uses of 1601. This book explores the substantial body of judge-made rules and principles developed since then, highlighting a carefully curated selection of the landmark cases which have shaped charity law. Each chapter analyses one or more judicial decisions, setting them in their historical context, explaining their contemporary importance, and considering their future relevance. The selected cases cover a broad range of topics. Some go to the heart of what it means to be a charity, elucidating charity's legal definition and public benefit requirement. The Internet of Things challenges many of the dichotomies which have shaped current laws: goods-services, hardware-software, tangible-intangible, online-offline. The book focuses on 4 specific challenges: things-as-service, liability, bricking of physical devices through software control, and the potential for enhanced personalisation, especially for digital assistants. The chapters analyse specific applications such as smart homes, connected cars, and consumer wearables with a view to providing innovative solutions to the new challenges posed by the Internet of Things, and to steer the development of the Internet of Things in a fairer direction. As well as offering an important analysis of the potential for smart consumer laws in the Internet of Things, the book also provides important insights into the growing divergence between Germany's and the UK's consumer laws since Brexit. This book was originally published in 1981 at a time when mass unemployment had returned to the United Kingdom. Now reissued with a new Preface by the author's literary executor, the essays in this volume discuss in detail the damage that was being done to the community and the economy at national and regional levels as a result of government policy. There are chapters on the political and economic aspects of the problem, on the comparison with the inter-war years, on youth unemployment and on unemployment in each of the regions worst affected. The collection as a whole provides an authoritative overview of a central political issue of the late 20th Century but one which still has resonance today as the post-Covid, post-Brexit UK economy teeters on the edge of recession.
