No One Gets Out Unscarred makes a simple but rarely acknowledged case: America's prison system is failing not only the people it incarcerates, but also the staff who work inside it and the communities to which almost everyone returns. Rather than treating prisoners and correctional officers as opposing sides in a zero-sum struggle, the book shows how their lives are bound together by the same punitive culture, institutional incentives, and political decisions.
At the heart of the book is an extraordinary exchange between two men who spent decades on opposite sides of the bars. Robert Barton has been incarcerated since adolescence in high-security federal prisons. Jack Donson is a retired Bureau of Prisons official who began as a correctional officer and rose to become a case manager. Drawn from more than fifty hours of interviews, their interwoven accounts reveal how a system designed to punish and control ends up brutalizing prisoners while simultaneously eroding staff morale, health, and judgment, producing an adversarial environment that makes everyone less safe.
Moving beyond exposés and redemption narratives, No One Gets Out Unscarred examines the everyday mechanics of incarceration: routine lockdowns, restrictive housing, medical neglect, mental-health failures, broken grievance systems, decaying infrastructure, and the hollow promise of rehabilitation. These realities are not presented as abstractions or policy talking points, but as lived experience, seen from inside a cell and from within the bureaucratic hierarchy tasked with enforcing the rules.
Rejecting both abolitionist polemic and law-and-order defenses, the book asks a pragmatic question with urgent implications for public safety: if more than 95 percent of incarcerated people will eventually come home, what kind of prison system actually serves society? By centering shared trauma, accountability, and common-sense reform, No One Gets Out Unscarred reframes incarceration as a collective problem and opens a conversation long missing from the national debate.

This book analyses recent developments in English corporate restructuring law from a range of comparative and theoretical perspectives, exploring some of the most difficult aspects of the design of domestic restructuring laws and their application in cross-border cases. Recent reforms to English law took place against the backdrop of corporate restructuring law reform initiatives in Europe and in many other regions of the world. These reforms reflect an emerging consensus as to the importance of such laws, both as a complement to macroeconomic stabilisation tools in times of extraordinary crisis, and as a determinant of investment conditions in more ordinary times. But it is one thing to recognise the importance of such laws in the abstract, and quite another to work out precisely how corporate restructuring rules should be designed. This book explores some of the most complex aspects of designing such rules. It does so primarily through the close analysis of the changes made by the enactment of the Corporate Insolvency and Governance Act 2020 (UK), and the interpretation of the new statutory provisions by the courts, although chapter authors draw extensively on examples from other jurisdictions to critically analyse choices made in the UK, and in some cases offer separate evaluation of restructuring law reform processes outside the UK, including in select jurisdictions in the EU and in Africa, and in the US. By drawing on experiences in other jurisdictions, and on insights from theory, the book casts new light on recent developments in English law, suggesting many avenues for further research and a range of implications for policymakers. These implications are brought out in an introductory chapter by the editors introducing the landmark 2020 reforms. This chapter provides a detailed synopsis of each chapter of the book, drawing out connections between them, and articulates some themes that run through the chapters that are salient for policymakers.

This book analyzes the rhetorical and ethical dynamics of a culture of jihadi cool/chic, and why these rhetorical and aesthetic techniques have been such a powerful recruitment force for particular transnational terrorist groups. The author uses an evidence-based approach, with frameworks derived from law, politics, philosophy, rhetoric, feminist theory, and communication studies, to examine various attempts to construct counter-narratives to the jihadi cool master narrative. This book is the first comprehensive academic treatment of the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (ICESCR) and employment rights, which has a global vocation demonstrated by having been ratified by 173 States since it was adopted in 1966. Workers' rights need protection and reinforcement. To achieve this aim, international human rights standards can play an important role. The ICESCR is the most important global UN instrument in this respect. It covers a wide range of employment rights, including the right to strike, and has global application. But it is not sufficiently developed and used, and national implementation often needs improvement. Part 1 of the book analyses general issues related to the Covenant, such as context, development, challenges, influences at the global and regional levels, interpretation and procedural elements. Part 2 deals with the specific provisions which are directly linked to the employment relation. The book is based on a thorough analysis, mainly, but not exclusively, of the case law of the Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (CESCR), that is monitoring the national implementation of the Covenant. Together, the chapters in this book will empower academics and practitioners in labour law to find answers to relevant and practical problems in order to better enforce and improve workers' rights. The book is the result of a project by the 'Transnational Trade Union Rights' experts Network (TTUR), linked to the European Trade Union Institute (ETUI).
