"Presenting a new approach to Euripides' plays, this book explores the playwright's ancient tragedies in relation to quotation culture. Treating extant works and lost works side-by-side, Matthew Wright presents a selective survey of ways in which Euripidean tragedy was quoted within antiquity, both in social contexts (on the comic stage, at symposia, in law courts, in education) and in different literary genres (drama, biography, oratory, philosophy, literary scholarship, history and anthologies). There is also a discussion of the connection between quotability and classic status, where Wright asks what quotations can tell us about ancient reading habits. The implication is that Euripides actively participated in quotation culture by deliberately making certain portions of his plays stand out as especially quotable"--

Providing the first edited text, translation and commentary of two Renaissance dream-narrative satires, this edition sheds light on the period's literary history and reception of classical texts. Cleophilus' De coetu poetarum (first printed 1483-1485) and Iustus Lipsius' Somnium (first printed 1581) are both framed as dreams in which their authors encounter ancient authors and compare ancient literary works to the deplorable state of literature in their own times. They belong to a tradition of reflections on the characteristics of literature and the value attached to it over time, while also themselves imitating ancient poetic structures. Lipsius' Somnium, written in a mixture of prose and verse that characterises the so-called Menippean satire, has attracted much scholarly attention as a central text in the tradition of satirical dream narratives that held sway in Humanist circles from the late sixteenth century onwards. By contrast, Cleophilus' elegiac poem has long been neglected by scholars, even though its wide contemporary popularity and importance as an early forerunner of this satirical tradition can be seen from later works such as Dante's Divine Comedy. This edition makes these two important texts more accessible and allows their assessment side by side, thereby contributing to a deeper understanding of Renaissance-Humanist satire and the wider development of literary history as well as the reception of classical literature in the early modern period.

Die Apocolcyntosis, überliefert unter dem Namen Senecas des Jüngeren, ist ein zwar kurzer, dafür aber umso boshafterer Text über die Vergöttlichung des Kaisers Claudius, dessen Eigenheiten und Schwächen hier bis ins Absurdeste karikiert werden. In der Tradition der Menippeischen Satire wechseln sich Prosa- und Verspartien ab, das Register reicht vom sublimen Epos bis zum Vulgärsten. Da den Rezipienten nicht nur intime Kenntnis der ganzen, immer wieder in Anspielungen aufgerufenen lateinischen Literatur, sondern auch der höchsten Gesellschaftskreise Roms zur Mitte des ersten nachchristlichen Jahrhunderts abverlangt werden, ist der vorliegenden Übersetzung ein Kommentar beigegeben, um für das Verständnis des mitunter schlecht überlieferten Textes ein erstes Hilfsmittel zu bieten. Enthalten ist außerdem ein Essay von Niklas Holzberg, in dem die delikate Frage der Autorschaft thematisiert wird.
