This lecture notes is based on a sequence of lectures on Reidemeister torsions by V Turaev.J Milnor showed that Reidemeister torsions and the Alexander polynomials are deeply related. By the surgery formulas of Reidemeister torsions, we can apply them to Dehn surgery problems, namely to lens and Seifert surgery problems, and to amphicheirality problem of a link. Since Reidemeister torsions of rational homology 3-spheres are elements in cyclotomic fields, we need algebraic number theoretical studies.Recently P Ozsvath and Z Szabo defined the Heegaard Floer homology which is a powerful invariant to study 3-manifolds. It induces the Reidemeister-Turaev torsion. We also explain it here.

K-stability of Fano Varieties

Principles of classical Hamiltonian mechanics say that the evolution of a dynamical system is determined by the Poisson bracket of observable functions with the given Hamiltonian function of the system. In Quantum Mechanics, these principles are modified so that the algebra of observable functions should be replaced by a noncommutative algebra of operators and the Poisson bracket by their commutator so that the canonical commutation relations hold. Thus, working with quantum systems, we must determine the 'quantisation' of our observables, i.e. to choose a noncommutative algebra whose elements would play the role of the observables. With some modifications, this question is the main content of the Deformation Quantisation problem formulated in 1978 by Flato and others.This book is based on the course that the author taught in the Fall semester of 2019 at Peking University. The main purpose of that course and of this book is to acquaint the reader with the vast scope of ideas related to the Deformation Quantisation of Poisson manifolds. The book begins with Quantum Mechanics and Moyal product formula and covers the three main constructions that solve the Deformation Quantisation problem: Lecomte and de Wilde deformation of symplectic manifolds, Fedosov's Quantisation theory and Kontsevich's formality theorem. In the appendices, the Tamarkin's proof of formality theorem is outlined.The book is written in a reader-friendly manner and is as self-contained as possible. It includes several sets of problems and exercises that will help the reader to master the material.

This book deals with the problem of bounding numerical invariants of nonsingular projective algebraic varieties from a unified point of view. Starting with a new insightful proof of the Castelnuovo theorem, the author proceeds with giving (sharp) bounds for basic numerical invariants (such as Betti, Hodge, and Chern numbers) of algebraic varieties of arbitrary dimension and classifying the varieties on the boundary. Many important results are proved in several different ways underlining different aspects of the topic. However, studying numerical invariants is just a pretext for the exploration of the rich and versatile interplay between geometry and topology of projective algebraic varieties which forms the core of the book. A special role in this study is played by the dual varieties and their degrees classically called classes. While making an extensive use of Lefschetz theory (which is now also available for varieties over an algebraically closed field of positive characteristic), the author also develops a new variant of Morse theory which yields statements (including bounds) on the level of CW-complexes and provides bounds for the homology of real algebraic varieties. In this way one also gets stronger forms of some classical results on the topology of projective varieties, such as weak and hard Lefschetz theorems, Hopf type formula etc. A detailed outline of the exciting centennial history of this topic and a list of intriguing open problems contribute to the value of the book. The exposition is accessible to students with only basic knowledge of algebraic geometry and topology.
