Spirituality, Medicine, and the Distortion of Christianity

Is there a human nature? Can knowledge of it help us live better lives? This book synthesises ancient and modern philosophical ideas and draws on scientific research to answer yes to both these questions. It develops an innovative normative theory on the basis of commonsensical, naturalistic, premisses; and it defends an Aristotelian normative theory -- whereby we should understand human goods as realisations or perfections of human nature -- against both traditional and emerging challenges to perfectionist ethics, including evolutionary biology and transhumanism. The result is a ground-breaking theory of 'natural perfectionism', which both returns perfectionistic ethics to its Aristotelian roots and shows how this is compatible with evolutionary biology and cognitive science. At a time when the very idea of human nature is viewed as something that can be readily transcended, this work recalls us to a realistic, sober and better-founded vision of it.

What does it mean to speak of humans as the image of God when apophatic theology speaks of an infinite God who transcends naming, comprehension, and worldly appearance? Bringing Church Father, Gregory of Nyssa into dialogue with the phenomenologies of Michel Henry, Maurice Merleau-Ponty, and Jean-Louis Chretien, Thomas Breedlove answers this question and explores the importance of embodiment to the doctrine of imago Dei. Divided into three parts, this book investigates humans' relation to the divine through three successive approaches. The first, in conversation with Merleau-Ponty, analyses the existential and phenomenological aspects of fleshly finitude as the paradigmatic site of the creature's difference from God. The second takes up Henry's philosophy of life alongside Gregory's metaphysics of participation to offer an account of creaturely life in its likeness or identity to divine life. The third, though conversation with Chrétien, examines the christological aspects of Gregory's anthropology in order to find the dynamic synthesis of likeness and difference that determines the nature of human beings as, in some way, reflecting God. In blending 4th century theology with 20th century phenomenology, Breedlove not only showcases the alternative perspectives they can offer each other, but further presents a novel theological anthropology. He argues that imago Dei is not merely one aspect of human identity, but rather precisely what constitutes 'human creatureliness', as is revealed in the dynamism and groundlessness of the flesh.

This work examines some of the most pressing problems facing contemporary systematic theology and provides a clear and coherent alternative to these views. Crisp promises to provide an overview of the contemporary landscape in the area of theological methodology (for students), and assessment of the strengths and weaknesses of each approach surveyed (for scholars) - both of these tasks have proven quite difficult for students and scholars, and this positive contribution to the field offers a clear and concise assessment of the methodologies on offer. He lays the groundwork for a vision of a common theological project across varied theological approaches, such as the importance of metaphysics and divine revelation, and the key doctrines of the Christian faith such as the Trinity and Incarnation. Crisp tackles a new development in the method of doing theology that "begins with experience" (queer and liberation) and argues that although experience is indeed a source of theological authority and basis for the formation of some doctrine, it is not the only source that factors into the formation of doctrine. And sets out a constructive proposal for addressing the question of how we understand the relationship between the different levels of theological authority. Can we still talk about Christian ethics? As most data show a great exodus from the Church, and general dissatisfaction with organized Christianity, there exists an urgent question of whether 2,000 years of Christianity have done more harm than good upon the Earth and its people. Christianity has been integral to colonialism, white supremacy, and the Atlantic Slave Trade, and perpetuates racism today. Large segments of Christianity continue to endorse discrimination against women, LGBTQ individuals, and other marginalized groups; underwrite a capitalist system that destroys the planet and renders portions uninhabitable; and manufacture a complex, individualized approach to poverty that promotes charity work but resists structural engagement. Christianity has done much harm in the name of Jesus. In fact, for at least the past thousand years, the mission of Jesus has been captive to a colonial ethic of exploitation and oppression that has contorted and distorted much of Christian theology and practice of ministry. This book issues a call to liberate Jesus from this oppressive, colonial ethic. It enjoins Christians with privilege and power to promote a decolonial, liberative Christian ethic that serves as a corrective to the harms Christianity has manifest and conventional Christian ethics has neglected or even supported. Liberating Jesus is designed for use in seminary or undergraduate classrooms, as well as for broader, public appeal, such as church or denominational study groups. It is not intended to be a comprehensive survey of the field. Rather, particular commitments animate the framework, namely a concern for justice and liberation. The ethical model presented and applied draws upon interwoven threads of liberationist, womanist, Anabaptist, and postliberal theologies, and offers a framework for a communitarian virtue ethic of liberation. It identifies the commonalities between these threads, notably the importance of community, character, and justice-while acknowledging their distinctions-and directs them toward the target audience: Christians who embody and enjoy various levels of social, economic, and political privilege. In doing so, it calls on them to confront the oppressive legacy of Christian ethics and begin to understand ethics as formation into a life of service and advocacy, following the witness of Jesus, for the liberation of the marginalized. By drawing on such an array of theological approaches, the book offers multiple entry points for readers from various perspectives and introduces them to a diverse collection of thinkers and surprising conclusions found at the intersections of these approaches. Liberating Jesus provides Christians with various levels of privilege a way to understand their role and responsibility in participating in movements for justice and liberation.
