Deutschlands Fließgewässer werden in ihrem Verlauf von der Quelle bis zur Mündung von zigtausenden Querbauwerken in Form von Sohlenschwellen, Wehren und Talsperren unterbrochen. Alleine für Nordrhein-Westfalen sind über 13 000 solcher Bauwerke erfasst. Von diesen sind aktuell bestenfalls 10% mit Fischaufstiegsanlagen ausgestattet. Fließgewässer weisen in aller Regel eine Zonierung auf, in deren Verlauf sich unterschiedliche Fischartengemeinschaften einstellen. Die Konzeption einer Fischaufstiegsanlage muss daher an die zu erwartende Artengemeinschaft angepasst sein, sollen die Bauwerke ihre Funktion angemessen erfüllen. Das Buch vermittelt grundsätzliches Wissen über das Verhalten und die physischen Fähigkeiten wandernder Organismen, denn die wenigsten Fischarten sind beispielsweise wie adulte Lachse in der Lage ein Wanderhindernis zu überspringen. Mit Blick auf die Dimensionierung der Bauwerke wird erläutert, wie die größte zu erwartende Zielart ermittelt werden kann. Analog dazu wird gezeigt wie auf die schwächste Zielart geschlossen werden kann und beides bei der hydraulischen Bemessung zu berücksichtigen ist.
