This book sheds new light on the complex relationship between criminal liability, sexuality and public health in the era of Aids. It analyses, in particular, the role of public health arguments, and the language of 'sexual rights', in legal struggles aimed at decriminalising certain forms of 'risky' sexual conduct. Addressing gay sex, paid sex, and sex carried out by people living with HIV and Aids, the book demonstrates how public health experts are increasingly arguing that the criminal laws used to regulate these areas of behaviour should be abandoned in order to reduce the stigma and discrimination experienced by the 'risky' sexual populations that they target.

Human Rights, the Rule of Law and Exploitation in the Postcolony: Blood Minerals examines how the legal frameworks of the global economy position the inhabitants of the postcolonial south in a legal and moral position that facilitates economic exploitation, juridical regulation, and dominion over land and resources. Drawing on several exemplary situations - from Africa (the DRC and Nigeria), Asia (India), the Pacific region (Papua New Guinea and Australia) and South America (Ecuador) - Blood Minerals describes how colonial rule operates in a violent and destructive cycle of mineral extraction. It shows how the populations of the postcolonial global south are stripped of juridical personality and become persona nullius, as the legal-economic frameworks of globalization enact colonial rule by declaring the lands that are to be exploited as void of law.

Whilst liberal cosmopolitanism is organized around the abstract individual, and constitutional cosmopolitanism is organized around the achievement of a formal arrangement, innate cosmopolitanism, is organized around a naturally-occurring collective whole: comprising all of humanity at any point in time, and understood as a historical phenomenon capable of exhibiting a will, interests or ends of its own. As such, innate cosmopolitanism is, he argues, is the leitmotif of international law. Patipolitics looks at what it means to enjoy the body under technocapitalism arguing that we need a new paradigm to talk about sexual enjoyment and suffering. It is not just biological life (biopolitics), nor even political death (necropolitics) that has power, but also regimes of enjoyment. In simple terms the paradoxical, ambivalent and traumatic realm of the sexual: a deadly enjoyment that demands satisfaction yet cannot be sated. This is Patipolitics, from the Latin patior- to suffer, which for psychoanalysis is also to enjoy.

The body is governed by a dizzying array of institutions: the family, social media, religion and the culture industries. These sites provide contexts for enjoying the body such as: self-image, object choice, identification, erogenous zones, taboos, codes of sexual morality, inhibitions, violence, and bodily abjection. But it is the ways in which these modalities are harnessed by apparatuses of power which makes them patipolitical.

Patipolitics examines how the body is instrumentalised, weaponised and fantasized through science, technology and capitalism. After highlighting the destructive and oppressive elements of patipolitics, the book elucidates the positive and generative dimensions to the patipolitical. The female body and its place in the masculine imaginary obscures a genuine enigma about the sexual body and power. Ultimately if patipolitics is to be affirmative as opposed to destructive we must ask what alternative future it can help us to imagine?
