Medien und bieten theoretische Zugänge für gesundheitliche Analysen an. Bezugsdisziplinen sind u.a. Kunst-, Kultur- und Medienwissenschaften, Philosophie und Geschichte. Die Beiträger*innen leuchten das Spektrum unterschiedlicher Perspektiven und Zugänge der Public Health Humanities erstmals auf Deutsch aus.

Um das Jahr 1800 herum wird Jugend zunehmend zum Ziel neuer erzieherischer Forderungen. In Zeiten einer vermeintlich wachsenden Kriminalität junger Menschen rücken Altersgrenzen und Erziehungsverhältnisse in den Fokus - so soll z.B. die richtige Erziehung vorbeugend wirken. Die Beiträger*innen des Bandes betrachten die Konzepte und Ansprüche gegenüber jugendlicher Devianz und Delinquenz in der sogenannten 'Sattelzeit' (1750-1850). Dabei gehen sie auf Quellen ein, die in unterschiedlichen Zusammenhängen zeigen, wie 'verwahrloste' Jugendliche zum Problem erhoben wurden, dem u.a. mit neuartigen Anstalten begegnet werden sollte.

Planet Earth has been a familiar concept for a mere fraction of recorded history. Until about the mid-1600s, most humans thought of Earth as immobile, likely either dim or simply invisible from the Moon or anywhere else in the heavens, and not (like the planets) participating in what Galileo called "the dance of the stars." A Universe of Earths: Our Planet and Other Worlds, from Copernicus to NASA retraces the exhilarating story of how all that changed, and how we came to perceive the Earth as a "wandering star." It's a story that has vastly augmented and enriched our understanding of how Earth and its inhabitants fit into the big picture of the Cosmos. But almost as soon as humans started to grasp that Earth is a planet, many also began wondering if perhaps the other planets might be earths. This bold conjecture ignited the whole gripping history and literature of space travel, of extraterrestrials, of other worlds. And yet the thesis that the Universe is full of other worlds like Earth has from the start been fuelled more by imagination than by scientific evidence. For all its appeal, it has consistently been undermined by observations of the actual Universe. A Universe of Earths offers a surprising alternative to that "other worlds" account, one that releases humans not only from the pre-Copernican view of Earth as low, lowly, dark, a cosmic sump, but also from the persistent modern aspersion of Earth as cosmically ordinary, "mediocre," "dethroned." Instead, from Copernicus to the present, we are confronted with the bracing realization that Earth is in the classical sense a star, a dynamically wandering one, and a bright, maybe even peerless participant in the dance of the stars.

This book presents a narrative and social science history of the powered upper-limb prosthesis. It examines how research, innovation and design changed in the prosthetics industry from 1945 to the present.A History of Knowledge and Production in Powered Prosthetic Arms opens with a history of artificial upper-limb making from ancient Egypt to 1945. It surveys the transition from early modern iron hands to eighteenth-century realistic-looking prostheses, influenced by the new ideas about rehabilitation, politeness, disability and aesthetic improvement. The book traces the evolution of these ideas as well as Enlightenment visions of scientific discovery of the body and its application in reproducing nature through technological progress. It shows the transition in the twentieth century from the craft design of upper limbs to university and clinic-based interdisciplinary methods in the production of new electric and gas prosthetic arms and hands. It contains case studies on commercial limbs developed at MIT, Ottobock, Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago, Northwestern University, University of New Brunswick, Ontario Centre for Crippled Children, Princess Margaret Rose Orthopaedic Hospital and the University of Utah.The book will be of interest to undergraduate students, graduate students, faculty members and professionals interested in biomedical engineering, prosthetics, rehabilitation, occupational therapy and the history of science, technology, medicine and disability.

Die eine Psychosomatik oder einen eindeutigen Bereich medizinischer Phänomene gibt es nicht. Im psychosomatischen Leiden stehen naturwissenschaftliche Evidenzen auf dem Spiel, es verhandelt den Status von Krankheit und Gesundheit zwischen Biologie und Gesellschaft. Als ›Unter-die-Haut-Gehen‹ psychischer oder sozialer Leiden, als Leiden an der Kultur, als Epochenkrankheit tritt dieses in historisch wandelbaren Gestaltungen auf: Im Gewand der Melancholie etwa, dann als Neurose und Hysterie und heute als Erschöpfung. Psychosomatik nimmt damit eine zentrale Position im Verhältnis von Literatur und Medizin ein: Denn hier ›verkörpern‹ sich psychische und soziale Leiden, Körper ›sprechen‹ und bezeugen die sie krankmachenden Umwelten.
