The Film Photographer's Handbook

Hal Fischer: Seminal Works collects Gay Semiotics with Fischer's rarely seen early photography and features a range of essays that provide vital perspectives on the enduring themes of his work.In the late 1970s, as gay men in San Francisco were enjoying a new era of liberation following the Stonewall Riots, Hal Fischer made a signal photo-text project that categorized denizens of the Castro and Haight-Ashbury neighborhoods by social type. Sly and systematic, Fischer's Gay Semiotics portrays the sartorial codes of queer street style--earrings, handkerchiefs, jeans, or leather--that broadcast a range of desires to potential sexual prospects. Fischer annotated his black-and-white photographs with commentary about gay archetypes, such as the jock or the hippie, with an occasional sense of irreverence. The series was published as an artist's book in 1978 and quickly became an influential record of a libertine era before AIDS, the rise of internet dating apps, and tech industry-accelerated gentrification transformed queer life in San Francisco forever. Kinship and Community: Selections from the Texas African American Photography Archive celebrates the rich history of photography made by and for Black communities in Texas. Kinship &amp; Community: Selections from the Texas African American Photography Archive presents a remarkable chapter in America's visual history. By documenting collective self-representation from the last decades of racial segregation--images of Black everyday life created by local Black photographers for Black communities across Texas--this collection celebrates a unique but overlooked regional culture while underscoring photography's enduring power as a social tool. Kinship &amp; Community rescues and elevates the work of more than a dozen photographers who helped produce this abundant visual culture, including A. B. Bell, Marion Butts, Hiram Dotson, Elnora Frazier, Curtis Humphrey, Alonzo Jordan, and Benny Joseph.These dedicated local photographers, typically operating as small businesses, recorded the activities and events of their communities: parades, award ceremonies, coronations, and other celebrations of everyday achievements. Many of them also contributed to national and regional publications, primarily Texas's numerous Black newspapers. While those contributions did include some coverage of civil-rights leaders and picket lines, their main emphasis was on the quotidian accomplishments of a vibrant and self-sufficient Black culture--accomplishments all the more remarkable for a wider context of entrenched racial and political oppression. As Nicole R. A collaboration between Jess T. Dugan (photographer of To Survive On This Shore) and curator Charlotte Cotton, Love Pictures centers around conversations about themes informing Dugan’s practice, including gender and identity, family and politics, writing and language, relationships and community, the book as object, and the dynamics of the exhibition space. These initial dialogues then prompted subsequent conversations with others in Dugan’s and Cotton’s respective communities: friends, colleagues, mentors, and subjects of Dugan’s work—including Dawoud Bey, Kelli Connell, Dorothy Moss, and Catherine Opie, among others. Transcriptions of these intimate and in-depth exchanges are woven with the first comprehensive survey of Dugan’s work in book form. Dugan's work is in the permanent collections of over sixty museums, including the Denver Art Museum, Getty Research Institute, Harvard Art Museums, International Center of Photography, Leslie/Lohman Museum of Gay and Lesbian Art, Minneapolis Institute of Art, Museum of Fine Arts Boston, Museum of Fine Arts Houston, Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, National Gallery of Art, and San Francisco Museum of Modern Art.
