This incisive volume offers fresh historical and constructive engagements with the ever fascinating and perplexing theological ethics of Dietrich Bonhoeffer. Matthew Puffer examines the historical crises out of which Bonhoeffer composed the manuscripts that would become his posthumously published magnum opus, Ethics. He explores the ways in which Bonhoeffer understood his work as a response not only to the ecclesial, social, and political crises of Nazi Germany, but more specifically to a "crisis in ethics," the failure of traditional forms of ethics to effectively respond to the state of emergency. Bonhoeffer famously wrestles with novel proposals for how Christians should think about responsibility, complicity, culpability, and guilt in ways that have left not only casual readers but also philosophers and Bonhoeffer scholars scratching their heads. In these chapters, Matthew Puffer argues for a critical reconsideration of the ethics supposed to have informed Bonhoeffer's participation in German resistance, but also for an extension of Bonhoeffer's thought to the global, ecological, and intergenerational crises of ethics that we face today. An ethics of hope proves to be an essential and ineliminable feature of Bonhoeffer's thought, evident in his insistence that ethics is fundamentally about how coming generations will live. If in its simplest form, hermeneutics is a quest for understanding, then part of that quest will always include striving to understand being and the meaning of being. This open access book takes that ambition seriously, arguing that hermeneutics and metaphysics, so central to philosophical thought but so rarely put in tandem, are two complementary fundamentals of human existence. Metaphysical Hermeneutics puts forward the argument for a hermeneutical metaphysics in service of philosophy's basic aim: to make sense of our experience. Jean Grondin builds his argument for this combined discipline around the idea of 'sense' - a theme that is both hermeneutical and metaphysical. What we seek to glimpse is not just a figment of the mind but always the meaning of something. Grondin calls on one of the founding figures of contemporary hermeneutics Hans-Georg Gadamer to test his theories, singling out the metaphysical dimension of Gadamer's ideas and questioning his seeming embrace and rejection of that dimension. Rooting these questions in the human search for meaning is a major contribution to the scope and resources of hermeneutic philosophy. While his work speaks very powerfully to the contemporary age, the language of Emmanuel Levinas can seem difficult to approach. This dictionary gives you access to terms he used to build his overall argument, including those he employed idiosyncratically and invented. The dictionary also includes terms from phenomenology to which he gave new meanings, and which focused his critique of Western philosophy. The Levinas Dictionary also makes the work of this central figure in 20th-century philosophy more easily readable in translation by including the original French words he used. Each term explored belongs to one or more of three periods of the work he regarded as properly philosophical: 1) pre-1940; 2) 1940-1960, including the writing of his magnum opus Totality and Infinity and 3) 1960-1995, including his second great work, Otherwise than Being. Entries show how the terms appear, develop, or mutate over the course of his work in the phenomenology of radical ethics. Including an intellectual biography and a chronology of Levinas' life and work, a list of primary sources in French and English, as well as secondary sources and a glossary, The Levinas Dictionary will provide a broad and far-reaching introduction to a thinker whose work has only become more relevant to contemporary theory and practice.

Tillich Research

Tillichs frühe Religionsphilosophie wird insbesondere aufgrund ihrer kulturtheologischen Intentionen geschätzt. Sie zielte indes zugleich auf den Entwurf einer zeitgemäßen Dogmatik. Im dogmatischen Zusammenhang modifiziert Tillich nun aber seinen Religionsbegriff, indem er ihm eine Theorie religionsaffiner Strukturen konkreter menschlicher Existenz unterlegt. Das Resultat ist die bedeutende Konzeption einer "anthropologischen Religionsphilosophie", die noch das späte Hauptwerk mit seiner Korrelation von anthropologischen Fragen und theologischen Antworten prägt. Nach einer Darstellung der Grundkoordinaten von Tillichs Religionsdenken nach dem Ersten Weltkrieg zeichnet Martin Fritz im Lichte der zeitgenössischen Lebens- und Existenzphilosophie die Weichenstellungen der Marburger Prolegomena-Vorlesung (1925) nach, wo erstmals die berühmte Wendung von "dem, was uns unbedingt angeht" als religionstheoretische Schlüsselformel auf den Plan tritt. Tillichs neues Programm wird daraufhin in verschiedenen Ausbaustufen der späten deutschen und frühen amerikanischen Zeit rekonstruiert. Damit gewährt die Arbeit nicht nur wichtige Einblicke in eine bislang vernachlässigte Phase der Tillich'schen Werkbiographie, sondern stellt zugleich eine Gestalt religionsphilosophischer Theoriebildung vor, die sich wiederzuentdecken lohnt.
